Aussie Reds

A big day on the South Aussie reds yesterday for my brother’s birthday.

  • 1989 Peter Lehmann Cabernet Malbec Merlot Shiraz - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley (2/22/2014)
I remember selling this wine on release and it was always such a well balanced wine, it certainly cleaned up on the show circuit in its day. Today at age 25 it has probably reached its apogee. The nose offers up an amalgam of smoke, Turkish delight, leather and sweet earth. It is sweet and vinous in the mouth with ripe fruit flavours countered nicely by savoury earth and tar notes. The wines structural elements have softened and it is full and round in the mouth with a gentle kiss of acidity punctuating the long finish.
  • 1991 Penfolds Shiraz Magill Estate - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Plains (2/22/2014)
This is a deliciously cool, mid-weight Aussie Shiraz. It smells of mint, sage, red berries and cedar. In the mouth it does not possess a huge amount of flesh and is relatively compact but delights with its savoury nuance and impeccable proportion. It has crisp acidity and leaves a nice earthy calling card once swallowed.
  • 1993 Peter Lehmann Shiraz Stonewell - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley (2/22/2014)
Expressive nose of blood plum, cedar, Christmas cake spice and licorice. It is sweet and dense in the mouth with powerful black fruits. It is a wine of good balance and there is crisp acidity on the finish giving the wine cut and poise. Drinking really well now but plenty left in the tank for further development.
  • 2006 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Cellar Reserve - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley (2/22/2014)
This is big scaled, explosive Cabernet but it is not too ripe or heavy. It is loaded with dense cassis fruit and dark chocolate and is threaded with a strand of licorice. It is deep, sweet and creamy with excellent detail and terrific length carried by sweet spherical tannins. This thing will live for many decades.

I always enjoy your notes on Australian wines, thank you!

Thanks Jeremy, i had the Magill last year and thought it was looking pretty tired. Glad yours was ok.

Was the 89 the Stodart trophy winner? If so, I remember thinking some years ago it was a good wine considering the vintage…

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

The Magill we had was in great Nick.

The 89 was indeed the Stodart winner, still holding up nicely.

Best Regards
Jeremy

Thanks mate
