Auction alternatives in NYC area for small quantities

No one is saying what they did was fine, but it’s hypocritical to judge a company when you support others that are far worse.

ok after saying the same thing twice, you’ve convinced me!

Michael Chang is right everyone, don’t sell your wine with BASF.

This particular argument, which comes up a few times a year, is among the most boring on the board. Some people believe you should not give your business to Acker due to their morally reprehensible behavior. Others believe it shouldn’t matter, if the arrangement benefits you. Both sides explain why the other is wrong, some insults ensue, no one changes their minds. Almost seems like it belongs in the politics forum.

Only two hours to get a Holocaust reference. Impressive!

Now do Christie’s, Bonhams, Spectrum, Vanquish, Baghera, Zachy’s, Sotheby’s, Heritage… and all their affiliated companies (Puma, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, etc). Sotheby’s is now owned by Patrick Drahi, so also add Altice.

Do those of you who advocate boycotting Acker patronize any of the above?

was impressed by that myself. we are getting very efficient with these threads. i wonder if the better metric is number of posts though. fine with either.

Use who gets you the most money. They aren’t running a charity.

we need ESG for spending habits.

Why waste time?

Never stops surprising me that the only message board I know that requires real names also has a sub forum dedicated to something that is arguably illegal

it’s an interesting one. i mentioned this to todd years ago as a potential risk vector for the platform (though that was in the context of charging for commerce corner - not sure that would matter). i may have been overly cautious but who knows. i’ve purchased and sold on cc many times so disclaimer that i’m highly biased and not to be trusted on this topic.

Unless we are talking about licensed sellers, it’s not “arguably” - it is 100% illegal. Enforcement risk is low and it’s not unreasonable to take the risk, but if you’ve got a lot to lose or your high risk for these types of things then selling on commerce corner is not an option. I definitely would not recommend it to someone without making that clear.

It is hard to answer the question without knowing what the wines are. Your mid to lower tier might not be mine.

Why not just use winebid they pick up in NYC and seem to be the best for this type of sale, although it has been several years since I have used them.

Winebid has a min of ~2500-5000

I did not know that. I wonder if this is why a lot of the less expensive wines have seemingly dried up. The German wines have really shrunk. This is also why I said it is hard to answer the question without know the wines.

They’ve always had an aggregate minimum, but they increased their commission for bottles hammering at $40 and under ($8 seller commission per bottle) in the last year, so that has probably dissuaded consignments at that level.

Not to totally hijack this thread, but does anyone know if the Zachy’s online auctions charge tax in addition to the 24.5% buyers premium? I don’t know whether it is run out of DC (no tax) or NY and what the rate is. It isn’t 100% clear in the terms and conditions so I was hoping someone with experience could answer. TIA.

Zachy’s charges NY state sales tax on ‘wins’ in their auctions.

But I don’t know about their Hong Kong auctions. Or UK for that matter.
