Assorted slurps

Sorry for the random notes. Have been even more busy than usual but wanted to pass along a few recent notes.

  • 2007 Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina Rubentis - Spain, País Vasco, Getariako Txakolina (7/4/2009)
Light spritz. Stuningly floral nose. Cutting acid. Blasting mineral. This really is my favorite Rosé in the world, Tempier be damned.
  • 2006 Sine Qua Non Grenache Raven Series - USA, California (7/4/2009)
Funny. I ‘tweeted’ when I consumed this, and three comments came back immediately from others that they preferred the Syrah to the Grenache. Sheesh, let me make up my own mind… They are quite right thought. This Grenache is lovely, beguiling, silky, roasted plums, nice spice, sappy, mouthfilling, yet not too heavy. A little salty on the finish. However, in a word it is ‘yummy’ whereas the Syrah is ‘serious’, not even in the same league with each other. (91 pts.)
  • 2002 Marcel Deiss Schoenenbourg Grand Vin - France, Alsace, Riquewihr, Alsace Grand Cru AOC (7/5/2009)
Wow, quite ripe on the nose with hyperripe peach. The palate seems to show a lot of Gewurz with peppery, spicey notes, rich, nicely mineral. Does well closer to 50 degrees than 55. (92 pts.)
  • 1988 Il Colle Brunello di Montalcino Riserva - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (7/10/2009)
While the overall vertical of Il Colle Brunelli has been a disappointment, this bottle was a treat. Lovely sandalwood and baslamic on the slightly musty nose. Fantastic palate, dry, powerful, sour cherry, supple, almost Burgundian but with a hammer of a finish. Quite pleasing. (92 pts.)
  • 2004 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine - France, Alsace, Alsace AOC (7/18/2009)
Vino-Lok, so cool! Nice petrol and pear aromatics. Stunningly dry, mineral palate, salty, really pretty wine. (91 pts.)
  • 2006 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Rosella’s Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (7/18/2009)
A bit raspy. Cherry cola, tarry, twangy. A bit raw and unwound still. Brambly. Hint of sour pickle, tart, tangy. (89 pts.)
