Are there wines that are inevitably polarizing?

So I went to a Mollydooker blending party last night, and those wines would be the poster kids for polarizing wines. The guests at the party seemed to enjoy them quite a bit, but I don’t know if anyone disliked them and kept quiet for the sake of diplomacy. Having tasted them, I understand why they are exceedingly polarizing.

Are they considered ‘wines’?

And I think someone said Pinotage. Hardly polarizing as it is universally agreed upon that wines made from this variety suck.

I’ve had some Pinotage that I’ve really liked.

Joel Goldberg (Mocool) opened a Pinotage for Errol Kovitch, myself, Roy Hersh, Chaad Thomas, and a few others late last year that was very nice indeed. My recollection is that everyone enjoyed it. The downside is that I didn’t take formal notes and cannot recall the name of the wine.

As with all generalizations, there are exceptions…

Lots of very fine Pinotage out there.

I would mention Gewürz / Malvasia / Moscato as being love hate things for many folks.

Also fizzy reds and wines that simply are NOT about Fruit (as well as those that are ONLY about fruit).
