Are Italian wines more prone to TCA?

The two consecutive corked Barolo bottles opened at my house on Saturday got me to thinking about the theory that Italian wines are more likely to be corked than other wines - CA, France, etc, because they don’t spring for the good cork.

Thoughts?

strictly anecdotally i’ll jump on the bandwagon and say yes. i grew up on Italian wines too!

Like Glenn…I agree. I seem to see more corked Italian wines than anything from CA.

The only other region I saw a lot of corked wines from was Spain…but I rarely drink Spanish wines these days save a few Albarinos.

It normally comes down to the quality of the cork bought. Sometimes some places or wineries won’t even have much of a choice depending on who is supplying. Or at least it was that way in the past. Spain evidently got inferior cork than France even though they are much closer to Portugal. Personally, I’ve seen no correlation with country and TCA taint.

Agreed. No correlation. Proof would be many VERY old bottles of Barolo and Barbaresco that I read about on this and other boards being consumed and in perfect shape.

Let’s just hope you had a bad run, Todd.

todd you just angered Roberto. Watch out!
