Anyone use Uber in Paris? From CDG to city? In the city?

I’m no expert but I think Pop is technically classified as a car share rather than private hire. What that means practically I’m not sure.

As explained to me, UberX is considered “okay” by the Paris cabbies/government because they are already registered drivers, and this is just another platform for them to get customers. It’s UberPop (what is UberX in other countries, with unlicensed, ‘amateur’ or part-time drivers) that got shut down. UberX still works well, and remains generally cheaper than cabbies. Service is certainly better!

“Unlicensed”? Can you expound?

Just back. Had zero problems with Paris taxis. Matter of fact I was amazed at how every single one I took was clean and comfortable. I guess YMMV.

It’s confusing because Parisian UberPOP is equivalent to U.S. UberX. Parisian UberX is all black car drivers, typically full-time professionals. The POP is what was recently shut down, and I wouldn’t recommend anyway because the price of the UberX is very reasonable (except on surge). We used it a lot and never had a bad driver. Contrast this with the crooked cabbie who charged my mother, who is in her 60s, EUR30 to drive the 3km from the CDG Ibis to Terminal 2!

We travel pretty light, and so I’d still take the RER most of the time. Our apartment included a car service the last time, but we had to find him at the airport, and then it took more than 90 minutes to get to the center of Paris, which was a real drag. Next time I’m ordering a Lebara sim ( http://lebara.fr/ ) so I can use Uber right from the airport. It takes a few weeks to arrive since they ship from France.

Count your blessings. I`m looking forward to your experience if I do mort use UberX or a car service.

I tried to use a car service. I had to use a taxi instead because the car service never showed up.

Sorry, ‘unlicensed’ was a poor choice of wording on my part. I meant to say, unregistered. As I understand, UberX drivers are like limo drivers in the US, in that they are ‘registered’ professional drivers. As for who regulates them (who they are registered with), I don’t know - TBH I don’t even know who regulates limo drivers in the US!

Hello,

As I am living in France and from my personal experience, here are some informations about transportation from Airport to Paris.

  • Subway (RER) - it’s good if you travel with light lugguage or a backpack, some stations are not equiped with elevator (not a problem if you can take stairs with 20kg on each hand…) - ETA= 30 to 40mn

  • Bus (RATP or Air France shuttle bus) - Good if you stay in the center of Paris as they stop at Opera.

  • Taxi (G7, Taxi Bleu or not affiliated with a taxi company)- There are differents type of taxis available (Toyota Prius, regular sedan, and van), you can pick one directly from the Airport, plenty of them are waiting for you at any time - ETA 30mn to 1h

  • Uber or Chauffeur Privé - From Peugeot 508 to Mercedes S Class, they are working like a regular taxi, except that they will open the doors for you and load the lugguages in the truck without any fees, UberPop has been shutted down because of inssurance and taxes issues. ETA 30mn to 1h

  • Limousine (like Philsam) - First class service with premium german car, you have to book them before your arrival - ETA 30mn to 1h

  • Motorbike Chauffeur - Good only if you travel with a backpack or a suitcase. Most of the time they are using Honda Goldwing, but use it at your own risk, they are not insurred to transport a person - ETA 20mn to 30mn

As France is best know for their strikes, I would highly recommand a Limousine. As a wine lover, you can also book them for a visit to the Château of your choice (round trip+lunch+visit)

    Hope this help !

Great info and much appreciated.

Took uberx a lot in Paris. Put in your address and go, piece of cake. Flat fare from CDG to Paris for 45 euros. 10/10 would do again. Way more ubers in Paris than LA to boot, I don’t think we ever waited more than 3-4 minutes for an Uber to arrive. Typical 15-20 minute ride, roughly 8-10 euros a ride.

Yep we requested an uber in Paris and found the car was literally right in front of us. We were in within 10 seconds of assigning. C class Merc for less than the metro ticket would have been.

This was after the stage of the Tour de France, no normal cabs to be seen.

Thanks Charlie and Russell. The timing is perfect as we leave on the 27th for 8 days in Paris. Well definitely do Uber from CDG to the 5th were were staying and throughout our stay when we need transportation in addition to Metro and RER. I appreciate the feedback.

Charlie, I assume at CDG, you put in your terminal and exit info for them to pick you up. If not, do they have a designated area for pick ups?

Super organised at Frankfurt. If you order for the airport you enter the terminal and the door number and they come right to you.

they pick up at arrivals. From the baggage claim just take the escalator up and exit. There’s a bunch of parking spots along the curb and people waiting. He called and asked where I was. He was parked right in front of me

Nice. Appreciate your response Charlie.

Got off the plane at CDG, secured luggage on the same level as the Arrivals, walked outside to get Uber and the app gives me a too often message of TRY AGAIN. After 15 minutes, Im resigned to getting in the taxi line and stated such to my wife only to be overheard by an Uber driver standing near the entrance. Now, its a cash deal off the record and starts at E 75. I declined and he kept going until I accepted at E 50.

Once in Paris, I went through many processes to get Uber app to respond and finally succeeded by deleting and reinstalling.

During an 8 day stay, I heard so many horror stories about over charging, accelerated fees for peek times, that it almost appeared to be a hoax. My first thought is its a ploy on the part of the taxi union to spread such and its gotten to the extent of being the truth whether or not it is.

Were now in Amsterdam for 3 weeks with the app working, but no cars available at almost all times. No need anyway as we walk wherever we need to go since we are staying in the Centrum and thats where we hang out for all of our destinations including a long walk to the Van Gogh Museum. Were getting the same bad rub on Uber here; whether true or not, it remains to be seen.

So much for my initial post.

I’ve been in Paris for two weeks, with another two weeks to go. Prior to that, a couple of weeks in Milan and Venice. Uber has been terrific, both here and in Milan. Even at 2x surge pricing in the rain at 8pm, the most expensive trip way across town has been €20. A taxi would have shown up with €25 already on the meter at that time. It has been flawless. Last night we took the Metro to Le Chateaubriand because traffic was gnarly and it took less time on the Metro. Took Uber back for €11. Our twice daily average trip is something around €11 or €12. I’m a fan.
