Seems to be an absolute dearth of tasting notes out there. As one of the few suckers who just couldn’t say no to the mailer, I got my 3 pack of crow and 2 pack of the M. Etain delivered yesterday and before I bury them deep in the cellar, I was hoping to find a few initial notes with some details about drinking windows to stick on them.
I feel awfully conflicted about Scarecrow. I’m now holding a case of it, and have actually only had it once in my life (the 06). Somehow this is the wine that turned me into that guy I always made fun of, who collects for collecting’s sake more than drinking enjoyment.
Had the 09’ M. Etain last weekend. To be quite honest I didn’t see the wow factor. My tasting note is below. For me there was simply not enough structure and as one taster noted it was like drinking a big ol’ milkshake.
91 points: Opened late Friday and finished today. Deep dark sweet nose with cherry and chocolate. Palate is a bit loose not a strong structure. Lacks strong acidity to stand up to the oak and massive fruit. (85 views)
Thanks for the notes, Jim … your notes suggest you don’t think it’s the kind of wine that’s going to come together in time … is that accurate ? When I see terms like “loose” and “lacking acidity”, it doesn’t give me much hope for the future. I’m surprised, because most of the notes I’ve seen online re: the 09 M. Etain have been pretty darn positive.
Opened one tonight, poured through Vinturi into a decanter. I have to say it seems kind of thin and a bit uninspiring at the moment. It’s “good”, but I feel like its the shy girl at a dance and just needs to open up. Potential is there, just stop standing on the wall!
You owe it to yourself (and quite possibly your credit card next year) to grab a corkscrew and open one of those 2009 Scarecrows this weekend.
You won’t be that guy much longer.

Cheerio(s)!
