Anyone had Camille Giroud wines?

Has anyone tried any of the red Burgundy wines from Camille Giroud? This is Ann Colgin’s Burgundy project. I recently picked up this one. Any idea what to expect?

Great wines made by David Croix.
I like them.
Don

Yes, I’ve had them.

These are good wines.
To call this “Ann Colgin’s Burgundy project” is probably an inadequate descriptor, or, at least, a misnomer of sorts.

Very good wines indeed, I was there in 2006 and tasted the line-up. He’s doing some great work.

As John said, this is not Ann Colgin’s project. Ann’s husband, Joe, is a partner in Camille Giroud with some other American Burgnuts. David Croix is the winemaker and an exceptional one at that. A couple of years ago, I spent an afternoon with him in Burgundy. At lunch, we drank 1990 La Tache, an unforgettable btl of grape juice.

He is one of the great young winemakers in Burgundy.

Thanks for the clarification. I look forward to trying this one out.

I agree. Great wines. He also has a negociant business. Domaine des Croix, I believe?

Guess i’ll be the vocal opposition. Yes David Croix is making interesting wines there NOW, but for years and years Giroud was a really cruddy winery. All that old overpriced stuff lying around is generally unimpressive Burgundy as there are many and I mean many wines better and cheaper, maybe not at that age, but who wants to drink 1976 Pommard Rugiens from Giroud, when it’ll be average at best and overpriced. The stuff now is good and I respect what he is doing but the wines don’t ring my bell. I like Jadot better and he is cheaper and the styles are a bit similar. Jadot has more finesse.

So what you are saying Lyle is that it is good, as long as I don’t go rooting around for the old stuff?

Other way around, Giroud is the negociant, Domaine des Croix is estate wines but I think David is at most a part-owner.

I’m kinda with that. Some of the older ones are excellent but some are real bad. Luck of the draw, which makes sense considering it’s a negociant operation.

The style now can be good if you like that style. It is undeniable the wines are good. The style is a bit blocky for me and I like more finesse Burgs anyway.

Start low from Bourgogne Rouge and Santenay and see if you can get a handle on the style then move on up and eventually get to the Chambertin stable.

FWIW I have liked the Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru “Pertuisots.”

Just for clarification, as Lyle is being Lyle…David Croix is about 28 years old…in about 2002, a group headed by Joe Wender purchased Camille Giroud, a NEGOCIANT in Burgundy that had fallen on hard times. In the past they made some OUTSTANDING wines, but also made some horror shows. He, nor the new ownership had anything to do with the older stuff.

I believe his first vintage was 2003? but maybe 2004?

FWIW, I brought a 1971 Camille Giroud Volnay Santenots out to Las Vegas in February and had it at dinner with Gil Lempert Schwartz. The wine was amazing, as it has been when I had it previously. And it was a bargain before the new ownership came in and sealed off the incredible library of the estate. Fortunately, I got my hands on a bunch of this stuff before the sale went through.

Domaine des Croix is in its baby stages, but I have no doubt that David will start making excellent wines there.

First vintage was 2003. I carried it at Crush. The Santenay. No bargain but a nice enough wine. Tasted a ton of older stuff but never had the ONE, but know people that have had. People’s palate’s I respect for sure. I am sure that '71 Volnay was great as in every bag of coal there is a diamond. I am just cautioning people who see Giroud older wines and assume because Croix is making the wines now, his father or some great winemaker was making them then. That is not the case.

Yes, clearly good advice. I agree with that. Like I said, much of the really great stuff was gone from the cellars before the sale took place.

I also give that advice for Remoissenet older stuff. 80 percent crap but 20 percent can be OMG stuff.

OMG when looking at the price tags!

Don’t have a whole lot of experience with Giroud but a 2005 Vosne Romanee I had last year had grand cru length with a few hours of decanting, I was blown away… I bought 6 more the next day!
