Anybody See The Spectator Ratings On Some 2007 Bordeaux?

Ouch. Barely acceptable scores for wines that cost up to $1,300.

WS Insider gives Petrus a 92 and has the release price at $1,300.

Three First Growths are between $400 and $500 and only garnered 91 to 92 points. I am not a buyer of any of these, I just wonder who is? These prices are reeee-dick-you-luss IMNSHO. I can get wines of similar or better quality for an order of magnitude less.

2007 might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and causes a price correction.

Trolling for Leve

We’ll assume, then, that retailers will use WA ratings rather than WS, as they can triple the price with WA, and charge only ‘pre-release’ or less with WS.

Interesting to have such a wide discrepancy, though.

Bear in mind that WS gave most 1986 classified growths scores in the 70s and 80s initially. A year or so later they bumped them all up by 10 or 15 points (“Never mind!”).

More fuel on the wine deflation fire:

  • 06 and 07 bordeaux with better 08s on the way.
  • 06 and 07 Oregon with better 08s on the way
  • 04 and 06 Napa/Sonoma with stronger 05 and 07s
  • Good 07 CA PNs with lesser 06s.
  • 05 italians with better 06 and 07s.

Seems like a lot of potential markdowns to come. There are enough good vintages that they won’t all be like 2007 S. rhones(high demand) and plenty of mediocre ones that haven’t been sold thru. Not to mention all of the back vintage bordeauxs. The Aussie dumping, etc.

I’m guessing someone might have the ability to pump some of those vintages/regions up a bit…

Well according to Jeff’s comments elsewhere, 2009 Bdx will be white hot, as will 2009 Rose from Bdx.
