Any Impressions On Yann Chave?

Wondering is anyone has any impressions on Yann Chave. And the Crozes Hermitage?

I think the wines have really come into their own for value Crozes and straight Hermitage. Very balanced and speak of place. Don’t sell these, but did 5-6 years ago, still try them when I see them.

It’s been a while, but I recall having positive experiences. The wines were never mind-blowing, but they weren’t Frank Stallone wines, either.

That is an interesting descriptor.

Here’s a note from last year:

  • 2005 Yann Chave Crozes-Hermitage Le Rouvre - France, RhĂ´ne, Northern RhĂ´ne, Crozes-Hermitage (6/2/2013)
Barnyard, earth and meat on the nose. On the palate also a good, solid, meaty Croze. Fine for midweek meal where you don’t mind capping after a glass or two. Very Good.

Great 03’s

I have the 2011 Crozes Hermatage. Going to hold it for a couple of years at least.

I bought the 2004 Hermitage some years ago, opened a bottle and was disappointed - a disjointed, unbalanced wine that I thought was much too expensive. I forgot them in a corner of my cellar and re-discovered the case when I emptied the cellar a few weeks ago to do some renovation work (a safe door is going in). I also found some 2003 Leoville-Barton which I need to check out later, I don’t drink/like a lot of Bordeaux but sometimes buy some just for shit and giggles.

Yann Chave 2004 Hermitage
Popped and poured. The nose is interesting, black fruit, cassis, a whole bunch of aromas of which I cannot identify all. Wow! First sip is overwhelming - how that wine has changed! A harmonious impression with cassis, graphite, herbs, pepper and a hint of that “blood” component that I so love from Pegau, and some bacon too. The mouthfeel is “full” (for the lack of a better word), even for a Chateauneuf-lover like me, but very elegant at the same time. This is a wine that clearly needs even more years although I was blown away with the current performance. I need to buy some more of the recent years to hide in the cellar.

Did I say I liked the wine ?

I’ve always liked the Crozes for the money. Still have a few left in the cellar, I think 06 maybe? 1 bottle of their single vineyard I think.
