Another Shitty '07 Oregon Pinot Noir

No formal notes, but a DDO Laurene last weekend was delicious and showing very well. No need to keep, but no rush either.

We opened a magnum of 2007 Westrey Abbey Ridge a couple of days ago that, for my palate, was just about perfect. Classic Dundee Hills raspberry/strawberry/sweet cherry aromas and flavors. Well constructed and harmonious from start to finish.

  • 2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir White Rose Vineyard - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (11/25/2022)
This bottle is singing with everything I have loved about this wine. Nose: raspberry, dried cherry, leather, and rosewater. Mouth: brighter cherry, a hint of orange/zing that I associate with White Rose fruit, and a bit of cedar and soy. The gained weight all night as we finished the bottle. Just wonderful. Will probably drink my last few bottles over the next 2-3 years. But that's because I prefer some primary fruit be remaining. Others can drink well-stored bottles for longer. (94pts) (94 points)

Nice not. I have been out of 07s for many years, unfortunately.

This one was very delicious and still going strong. Several left.

My crew in MN called this wine many years ago as one of the best from the 07 vintage. * 2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir White Rose Vineyard - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (7/28/2009)
A friend of mine reminded me of this night that changed the impressions of the 2007 vintage of Oregon Pinot Noir at the Wine Company in St. Paul, MN. As one of the first pro reviewers in the world to call how great these wines were I will take a lot of the credit. Just found my notes on this night and can’t believe I did not post them moons ago. The 2007 White Rose is an amazing wine featuring rose petals, forest floor, cherry, mild spices and red berry fruits. Long finish and elegant. Just a wonderful wine! (94 points)

Celebratory bottle for passing my oral exam:

Opened up nicely over 3 hours, enough tannin and acid left, fruit still very present. Not a lot of complexity or armoatic interest, but I was surprised at how youthful this still seemed. Certainly makes me think that 10 years may be a floor for ageing OR pinot.

Congrats! Does your program require a defense, and if so, what will you be opening after that?

Birthyear wine for my middle child and drank over his birthday weekend. In a very nice place with red fruit and plenty of acidity left. Tannins are melting and the tertiary flavors are developing. A wine I picked up a little of and plan to drink once a year. Unlike the Willakenzie above, this is squarly in the restrained style (even with a 13.9 abv label) and I don’t see it fading anytime soon. One more datapoint in the growing collection that suggest 15+ years is my preference for OR pinot.

Still working through my shitty 2007 wines, this time with wines from vineyards near the tops of the two Dundee Hills crests - a 2007 Arterberry Maresh, Maresh Vineyard and a 2007 St. Innocent White Rose Vineyard. The Maresh wine shows cranberries and a bit of soil after some dustiness blows off. Good, but fading. The St. Innocent, on the other hand, is still confirming it was one of the wines of the vintage. Amazingly, it still shows some primary fruit - raspberry and orange peel - to go with the mushrooms and hint of funk. If anything, this bottle is even better than my last in 2022.

I think that was the first vintage Jim rejuvenated the Arterberry Maresh label, although he had been making some wine for a few years.

Noticeably shy on the nose and dilute in the mouth compared to most SB’s, otherwise very fresh at 18 years. I don’t think I would be able to call it blind but knowing it is Temperance, the signature vineyard notes ring through. There’s always something volcanic with redder soil and redder fruit than other OR sites although I am not well versed in the area. Lots of herbs. Only been open for about 20 minutes and aromas, flavors, and tannins are filling out with each swirl and sip. Great texture. Not too much weight and just slightly grippy tannin. Terrific. My guess is it could run another 10 years.
