Just to be clear, the legal side of this is that Constellation now owns “To Kalon” which they acquired from Robert Mondavi, and they can apply that term to anything, from anywhere. Zin, pinot, origin, doesn’t matter. Do I have that right?
In the lawsuit by Constellation against Nickel, they claim they reserve the right to call ANY wine made from ANY fruit ANYWHERE in the WORLD, To-Kalon, if they choose. Perhaps we have a $9.99 Central Coast Chardonnay in our future.
I mentioned in the MacDonald thread, but if anyone is interested in the history of To-Kalon and what Constellation is trying to do here with their “brand”, Bedrock’s podcast interview with Graeme MacDonald is essential listening. It’s very worth it just to hear Graeme’s story of how Constellation’s fancy expensive lawyers try to buy him off and his response. The guy has my respect x1000.
Anybody spend more time recently looking into TKVC/try any of their stuff? Beyond the obv distaste of its current ownership, a $250 cab with that much critical acclaim that doesn’t have a 5 year waiting list is a pretty hard combo to turn down.
Aidan, immaculate timing as I was thinking about posting about this brand. I actually enjoyed two bottles of TKVC Highest Beauty 2018 last night at dinner. I’ve only had To Kalon Cabernet from Robert Mondavi and Realm but this sits up their with quality. I’ll share more detailed notes later this week.
I know when they started they only made Highest Beauty but in the last couple years branched out with HWC and Eliza’s. Curious about the quality comparison, especially considering they all release at the same price.
