An Afternoon with Merrill @ EMH Vineyards

My wife and I concluded our Monday taking Merrill up on an invitation to come by her home in Calistoga for a visit and we had an opportunity to share several different vintages of her Black Cat Cabernet Sauvignon, specifically the '08, '09 and 2012 vintages. Merrill had these ready prior to arrival and they did not disappoint!

A nice drive through Calistoga down a gravel road we came upon what I would call a beautiful country home surrounded by vines on almost all sides. As I exited my vehicle I was greeted with a ‘hello!’ and I introduced myself to Merrill as she was just finishing up some chores upon our arrival. Introductions were made all around and we were led inside by our hostess.

Merrill showed us her vines growing right off her back porch. What a BEAUTIFUL view to have on a daily basis! We talked about our trip, a little bit about the Berserkers board and just how Merrill came about this beautiful property and how she was able to begin EMH Vineyards and began producing her wine. A magnificent story that one can only dream of lucking into.

We were seated at her dining room table and took our time tasting the three vintages amongst conversation and really enjoying the intimate setting and personal touch. All three wines showed exceptionally well and we truly enjoyed each of them! The '09, in my opinion, was drinking incredibly well and is ready now! The '08 could maybe use another year or two but also tasted really nice. Finally the 2012, while young, it is approachable now but we will lay it down for a few years.

A visit that was initially planned for about 90 minutes went on to almost three hours without noticing it one bit. Very nice company that accompanied nice wines. A big thank you to Merrill for inviting my wife and I into her home. I will be sure to recommend her wines to several of my friends that also enjoy Cali Cabs!

Agreed on EMH wines. As a matter of fact, I’m picking up my '12’s Sunday morning. [wink.gif]
