Thanks Blake, if I do find something, I will certainly pass it along. Sound like I’ll have to wait for the following week in Paris to find worthy wine bars.
Cafe de Klepel. Basic three-course French, about 32 Euros. Wine list is one of the best of seen lately. Not especially deep, but well chosen, fairly priced and there were good options with some bottle age.
We will be staying on Kloveniersburgwal Canal and were wondering if you might be able to recommend nearby cheese and bottle shops. Meeting another family and the plan is to stay up late in our apartment and drink/nibble as the kids are sleeping.
Thanks for the cheese rec Steve! I had the beer bar places already mapped from beeradvocate and I’ve done the van gogh museum already (and not sure if Miss Emma would enjoy it)
First, go to my stam cafe, de Engelbawaarder at Klovensburgwal 59 and sample the beers on tap. Fabulous selections, mostly from Belgium. Great place with wonderful staff. Good and reasonable food as well.
There is a cheese shop also on the same straat across from the Nieuwmarkt plus a nearby good one, The Cheese Factory Warmoesstraat 56.
If your beverage request includes wine, go to Cave Rokin at Rokin 60.
One more thought re cheese purchasing. On Saturdays, there is an open air market at the Nieuwmarkt and at least 2 really fine cheese purveyors selling. There`s a whole lot more fresh foods, nuts, oils, flowers and on and on should you want groceries or snacks and there are some nice stands selling food made on the spot such as crepes, burgers, pancakes and sandwiches.
That’s great info, Blake. We’ll be there next weekend for not even two full days, and have done all the museums etc. A market would be perfect on Saturday!
In my mind, so is the rec for the Engelbawaarder. Its such as great place with good people and ownership. Its the neighbourhood bar from heaven. The food is surprising really good. Fresh, good attention to quality and priced just above break even [for the students nearby at the U of Amsterdam]. Even the snacks in the day time are winners.
Paul, yes we did the Bols thing on a previous trip and enjoyed it. Appreciate the offer, but we get in Friday evening, have dinner plans that night and Saturday, plus need to visit our favorite bar, then home on Sunday AM, so I think we’d prefer to keep Saturday day loose and relaxed.
We’ll be there next weekend too (not this coming)! Arrive on Sat morning. Juan has a wine event with our distributor. So, Nolita and I will be tourists. Then down to Brussels, Bruges, Paris and then fly to Malaga and do the Holy Week at the winery and Lorca.
How funny - yes, ours is not this coming weekend (day after tomorrow), but next. So we’ll indeed be there at the same time. I have two days working in London beforehand and Jonathan will hit both Germany and Italy briefly on the way. All the bouncing around makes a quiet Saturday de rigeur.
In de Olofspoort. We’re nearly out of my favorite sipping bitter that is only bottled for them called “Hallelujah.” Great selection of jenever as well. I’m sure there are bars with as good or better selection - we made a nice connection at this place and love the Hallelujah.
