I’m new to the forum and this is my first post, so hello! Next summer I will be traveling through the Alsace and German wine regions, starting and ending in Frankfurt. I can see the various drive times between certain points, but I’m wondering what a realistic time frame would be to enjoy and appreciate the area without too much rushing around.
The plan so far is about nine days. Starting by driving directly from Frankfurt to Strasbourg (or a bit farther), then working my way back up. Also visiting the Mosel and Rheingau.
Does nine days sound reasonable? I’d like to stay in two or three cities then just make day trips out and around. I just don’t want to plan in too much so I’m rushing around from one spot to the next.
Any input is appreciated! Thank you.
I think you can accomplish what you’d like to accomplish in nine days. A direct route form Frankfurt to Strasbourg, however, would take you through Rheinhessen and the Pfalz, both of which I heartily recommend. A “base of operations” in the Pfalz would be Neustadt.
Depends how many wineries you wish to visit and if you plan on doing non-wine related activities. Perhaps you should develop a list of places to visit and things to do.
Thank you for the replies. I certainly intend to focus on Germany, but I thought I’d first visit a few places in France since it’sso close, then work my way up. The drive between these areas seems very manageable. I live in Colorado where a 3-5 drive to the mountains is fairly routine. Gosh it’s just a matter of planning enough time but not too much.
I think you’ll be amazed how much ground you can cover. And there are still very many places in those regions where you can show up without an appointment.
