Allen Meadows

We had Allen Meadows in town for our Tastevin.
It was one of the best events I have been to in some time.
Kudos to Allen and his better half Erica.

He is a special person with a really deep love and knowledge of Burgundy.
He gave an extensive historical talk on the origins of Burgundy and specifically Gevrey Chambertin.
Also discussed Morey-St-Denis.

I will post some notes on the wines when I have some time.

Allen is as knowledgeable as anyone about Burgundy. I’ve been to dinners and tastings with him and he never ceases to amaze.

Agree. A fascinating speaker and a really nice guy to deal with.

Some nice wines, Don, from what I saw in Bowden’s pictures.
Looks like you all had two nice nights.
Cheers.

I’ve only ever heard good things about the guy, seems to be the darling of Burgundy.

I’ve never had the chance to see him though :frowning:

Here is the tasting.

Ponsot Horizontal 2001/1999

2001

Chapelle-Chambertin - This started out very tight as did all the wines. They had been open for quite a while too. The nose here was inititally quite candied. Allen described it as “lactic”. The palate shows a lot of structure and mineral notes. The finish was nice. This was my least favorite.

Griotte-Chambertin With unwinding an intense cherry note comes out in the nose. Vibrant. The palate is still a little structured. Fabulous tart cherry notes with a long finish. This is excellent!

Chambertin - This bottle was off in some way. The nose was oxidative to begin and the palate was stripped.

Clos de la Roche VV - Now we are talking. The nose is fantastic. Darker cherry with a vibrant quality. The palate here is still youthful. Cherry fruit with an absolutely fabulous finish. This is fantastic.

Clos St Denis VV Intoxicating nose. Complex. Absolutely amazing. The palate here is less assertive and more complex than the Clos de la Roche. Very long finish. This one is the only wine here that is starting to really drink in the wheelhouse.

1999

Chapelle Chambertin - Lots of concentration here. Youthful and rich. This just needs time. A little monolithic right now.

Griotte Chambertin - More reserved than the 2001. Intense cherry fruit on the nose and palate. Lots of reserve here. The wine is very young and VERY good.

Chambertin- This has a primary nose. Darker fruit with more earthy notes. The palate is quite tight obscuring what should become a nice finish. Needs significant time.

Clos de la Roche VV - Absolutely fantastic nose of primary cherry fruit. Intense and starting to flesh out the complexity of the future. The palate is big and intense. An infinite finish. A WOW wine to me.

Clos St Denis VV - This one starts out with a little of that candied fruit. Even after unwinding it doesn’t show everything. Reserved in character at this point. It is not as forward and giving as the Clos de la Roche. Still satisfying with some air.

Cheers.

Sounds like a great nite. Thanks for the notes
