I’m popping an Oregon Blanc in the fridge to open this weekend. Should I give it some air time or is PnP okay? @Matt_Perry
A bit of air definitely wouldn’t hurt. Hope you enjoy!
As Matt said, some air is great, but I would also suggest serving at cellar temp or just a bit cooler - not fridge temp. The wine is super compelling in the 50-55f range.
I went and grabbed an Oregon Blanc today at AOC after discussion here, and it’s quite compelling. Very fresh and linear with lots of reduction at first, which was itself quite enjoyable to my palate tbh, but giving it lots of air and letting it warm up really opened it up to be more integrated and balanced with a bit of richness on the finish. Good call @JustinP and lovely wine @Matt_Perry
For those who might be interested in picking up some back vintages of Walter Scott, Caveau Selections (the import/retail operation run by Mark Royer and partners) has a nice selection going back 10 years at very fair prices.
No connection to them other than as a customer.
Ryan Hannaford, Rocky Garcia and the team. Nothing more to say. Whatever they touch turns to vinous gold in my book, such detailed farming
Thanks for the kind words Jason. Bummed to have missed you at the AOC tasting last week. Hope to see you there next year!
@john_enea - let’s pop some shit.
Well that’s a difficult question as I have not compared the Wadsworth with the 2018 Clos Electrique Blanc. I have some of the CEB, but it’s offsite. It would make for an interesting comparison. The Wadsworth is quite intense, so I would suggest it’s the CEB on steroids. Rick Allen (@Rick_Allen) may have tried both at some point. I’m happy that I purchased what was offered to me. The wine should age effortlessly for 5-10+ years and I’m in no hurry to consume the remaining bottles. As a single barrel selection there were 23 cases produced of the 2018 Wadsworth…
Cortell Wines Chardonnay Cortell Collection 2022
A BD purchase. I had tried the Pinot Noir already, but this is my first bottle of her Chardonnay. From CellarTracker:
I use several variations of lime in my tasting notes – lime, limeade, lime zest, lime leaf. This wine, which is the color of dilute lime juice, suggests a new variation: lime pith (the somewhat bitter white layer that one usually tries to avoid). At first, it seemed problematic – too bitter, clashing with a lactic quality – but the wine quickly settled down and I came to enjoy the slight bitterness. My wife was confident that this was a Meursault – a very classy and delicious Chardonnay.
Thanks, yes we just picked up a nice collection of about 100 bottles All purchased on release by an avid collector and professionally stored in Portland. So the bottles have not travelled far. You can either go to www.caveauselections.com or ping me directly.
Grabbed a few 2017 chards from this stash over the weekend. Looking forward to them!
Hey Marus, when you have time, check out this amazing interview with the late, great Sean Thackery, specifically at 9:50, where he talks about doing this and that it was being done 1.400 years ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPCU2bcKO2Q&t=14s
The single vineyards are a BIG step up too!
Funny, my basic reaction at the tasting was that the Blanc wasn’t a big step down!
Thanks for posting that, Roy. Sean Thackery was such an articulate speaker and really a joy to listen to. I always really feel the kinship with people who were doing exactly the same job that I do centuries ago and even millennia ago.
I also hope that anyone who watches the video, understands that Sean’s opinion on winemaking as a qualitative impact isn’t actually mutually exclusive to the importance of terroir. If asked whether winemaking or terroir is more important, my answer would be both. But a creative and talented producer will find a way to beautiful wines in almost all terroirs, regardless of whether the place leans to linear, acidic wines or robustly intense wines.
Again, thanks for posting this. It’s nice to see the farmhouse feel of his winery.
Hey Mo!
How are the Ayoub wines? Never see discussion on here. One of my law partners is a fan but haven’t actually tasted one.
From the set of wines we took up to the Hood Canal.
A stand out from the evening was the 2021 Grochau Cellars Perlstad Vineyard Chardonnay. One of the groups 2-3 favorite wines and I loved it.
Leaner, seashell based flavors, clean lines, just enough texture but still weightless. I like this a lot.
