I opened the Walter Scott Cuvee Anne from 2018 on Tuesday but only had one glass. Today (Friday) it is a fuller, better integrated wine on the palate while retaining the same Walter Scott style. For me it provides strong acidity, some salinity, Meyer lemon, green apple/pear.
Thank you for the history behind the name. Really cool.
Always stoked to connect with a fellow Texan and Berserker. My palate would also be fatigued after young Lignier Clos de la Roche. That Pyscho Killer refuses to die! Boy does that wine have a long life ahead.
Hope to connect with you soon, Will. I’m overdue to come by and taste. Today marks one year since I moved to Oregon.
Last week at Walter Scott we tasted 2023 Freedom Hill, Soujeau and X-Novo. FH and X-Novo were fantastic.
What’s the tasting like there? How much does it cost, what is it like?
I do not think tasting is open to the general public. I am a long time customer starting with the 2013 vintage.
Their website says they don’t have tastings, and indeed I emailed twice (don’t ask don’t get!) and no response… so I guess they mean it at least as to the hoi polloi
I think you are right. I got to visit twice pre-Covid, but I think they have since decided that individual tastings were too time consuming vs. the sales they got out of it.
It’s great to have you here Aaron, and big congratulations on your first year/anniversary! I hope we have you for a lot more!
Popped a 2021 Violin Sojeau Chardonnay tonight. This is not nearly as reductive a style as I usually drink, Oregon or Burg, but it is an awfully nice Chardonnay with stone fruit and citrus, and a generous mouthfeel. Two thumbs up. Someday I look forward to visiting Will.
Opened a 2023 Hundred Suns Old Eight Cut Chardonnay tonight for dinner. I’ve had their Pinot many times, but this was my first try and their Chardonnay and I was very impressed. Nice acidity and well structured wine, especially in it’s youth. Overall a very nice wine that I would recommend.
We had the Vincent Chardonnay Willamette Valley Tardive from 2018 last night. It still has notable acidity but it seems to have fleshed out more on the palate. A little apple, a hint of white stone fruit, slightly creamy texture. A real bargain for sure at $30 or so.
Funny to login this morning to post about a Vincent Tardive only to see the above. Go figure.
Popped a 2015 Vincent Tardive Chards last night that I bought directly from the winery when he emailed about library wines. It showed its age just a tad (in a good way) with slightly darker color and riper aromatics. That said, it was still drinking very well and I’m glad I have two more. I’ll drink them over the next 1-2 years.
Happy to meet you at the winery sometime for a deepdive if you like.
congrats on your first year in OR!
Cheers
The 2019 Black Walnut!! That’s a dime. @Will_Hamilton, that wine was killer.
I just recently finished off my case of Vincent library whites, ranging from 2013 to 2018.
Apart from the 2013 which was a little disjointed and angular, all of the chards were enjoyable and showing no real signs of going over the hill. The ‘16 Chardive in particular was stellar.
That said, I did find myself thinking of these chards as I sometimes do Briords or Bregeon Muscadet. Yeah, I can age them but they’re so good now….
I’ve had a busy Oregon Chardonnay week. First, @Will_Hamilton dropped off some day-old samples of his 2023 Violin Willamette Valley and Sojeau Chardonnays. The Willamette Valley was good - like Walter Scott WV with less reduction. The Sojeau was a definite step up, with more going on in the glass. Both wines had great intensity and focus. Next up was a 2022 Brick House Cascadia, which was every bit as good as the Violin wines. Doug continues to up his game on the Chardonnay side. Last was a 2021 Walter Scott La Combe Verte. This was still reduced, but has calmed down in the last year. While this wine seems to still be on its upward arc, sadly that was my last bottle. The good news is that I’ve managed to not drink the single vineyard stuff from 2021.
I posted this in the “Tempting wine purchase’s you’ve passed on” thread, but figured it belongs here too.
E&R Wineshop running a 15% off sale this week on Oregon Chardonnay. I managed to Snipe some Morgen Long at a great price - happy hunting
FYI - they have a consolidate option and will hold wine for the summer for you so you can always start putting together a case now and pay for shipping this fall when you’ve got 6 or 12 bottles.
We opened a 2022 Goodfellow Temperance Hill Chardonnay a couple of nights ago, and it was very young but stellar. Great deep, and concentration, on the reduced side (as I would expect), and a long finish. Luckily I have a bunch of this, and will probably sit on them for at least another year before opening another one.
