Sure, there’s a reductive note, but not nearly as strong as the 2019 Morgen Long Seven Springs Chardonnay bottle opened the previous weekend. I’ve enjoyed a handful of the 2019 Walter Scott Freedom Hill Chardonnay over the years and probably have another case plus. The first bottle consumed in December 2021 was the best Chardonnay that I’ve ever tasted. All the Walter Scott magic was there including that tangerine orange peel citrus note. This bottle was good, but more subdued. There’s probably a small glass remaining in the bottle, so I’ll try to update later…
I saw the 2023 Tan Fruit wines are now for sale. Has anyone had a chance to try the lineup? They are now offering an “extra tan” version, which looks interesting, I assume is a reserve or extra tank age.
I drank a 2021 Violin WV Chard earlier this week. It was showing quite nicely.
I too recently had a ‘19 Violin WV Chard. In a great place. Bottle went so fast. I’ve loved everything Will makes. I’d drink any 2020 chards now and finish the bottle.
Popped my first 23 SVD from White Walnut tonight. 23 Worden Hill Rd. A stunning bottle really. Been dabbling in the White Walnut wines for the last 8 to 9 months and they have been impressive overall. Their pinots have landed a touch ripe for me but their chards are really a home run. @Marcus_Goodfellow mentioned these in the morgen long thread a couple months as a top name to watch and I absolutely agree. These wines deserve a seat at the table when discussing for who is pushing the quality forward in Oregon
Chris Mazepink has an excellent touch with Chardonnay and has been doing for longer than most people realize. Back in 2005 he was the winemaker for Dick Shea, and then shifted to his own label called Ebony after that. That was when he really hit his stride with Chardonnay. White Walnut hit my radar a couple of years ago, and I’m glad to see people here getting enjoying the wines.
I think that 2019 Violin WV was one of my favorite of Will’s wines. Unfortunately, I have been out for a while.
How was Crowley?
We went to White Walnut yesterday based on your recommendation earlier. Wow, really good chard as well as pinot, all reasonably priced. It was so good we joined their club. Only one case purchase required for the year for bottom tier and purchases are customizable. Beautful setting. To find such high quality WV chard at less than $50 per bottle (wine club prices) is rare. (Yours too, meet this criteria.) Thanks again Marcus for the tip.
I have a love affair with Oregon Chardonnay. Can’t wait to see what 10-20 years does to some of the bottles I’ve been collecting! A couple of recent rips:
How was the 1990 Kistler?!
Amazing! I cannot believe how well these older Kistlers hold up. I actually preferred it over the Xomni that night.
I have a couple more that I need to pop!
Fun 3-piece set of Chardonnay there.
How would you compare the 2019 Evening Land La Source to the 2021 Morgen Long X-Omni in terms of flavors, complexity, and overall enjoyment?
