I am having a friend fly in from Florence next weekend and wanted to do a rum soaked watermelon. I’ve tried this one of twice before (many many years ago) and had minimal success getting the alcohol to soak into the watermelon. I cam to the conclusion after much head scratching that since the watermelon is filled with WATER, it will likely not absorb alcohol.
Any suggestions as to how this is done successfully? Better yet, has anyone accomplished an alcohol soaked watermelon? any help you can give me would not only be great, but would also put me to shame. so there are two upsides for your efforts…
I have not done it with rum, but here is a video with vodka. I am sure it would work the same way.
Enjoy

that’s how i’ve done it in the past, but absorption isn’t what i’d like it to be. i wonder if there is a way to semi dry out the watermelon prior to putting the bottle in the melon. the drier the better i would think.
Did you wait one full day?
It probably would be better to dry it out a bit, but then you lose a lot of the sweetness of the watermelon as well, since the juice is likely to be laced with all the natural sugars.
i just punctured holes in it this morning. one the size of the bottle to be poured into the melon, as well as many skewer size holes. i placed it upside down over a large mixing bowl, hoping for liquid to slowly (or quickly) seep out as the melon dries. we’ll see what happens. i’m gonna monitor how much liquid exudes and add the rum as soon as the liquid ceases to seep. i wish i paid attention in science class as a kid.
