Airplane wines

Last time I flew with my three kids, they served me plastic bottles of Jack Daniel’s for $9. I drank lots of bottles, just like you folks; flying with three kids is hard!

2021 flight in Emirates F JFK-MXP was 2008 Dom (it says 2012, but it was 08 there, 12 the way back), 2011 Latour Corton-Charlemagne, 2008 Yquem, Sandeman 40 yr Tawny

Emirates supposedly buys on release and then ages their wines before putting them on the menu, which is pretty remarkable for an airline to take that initiative.

2024 flight in Singapore F LAX-NRT 2012 Comtes, Krug, 2016 Egly Ouriet VP, Bichot Grand Cru

La Premiere is serving Laurent Perrier in the lounge and in the air. It’s fine. From CDG<->JFK, I didn’t find the options that memorable. I prefer the flights where you can BYOB

No p2 on Emirates lately? Lame

You have your lounges mixed up. Turkish never did Krug, that was the Al Mourjan lounge in Doha. Before the Al Safwa 1st class lounge opened, the Champagne in Mourjan was Krug. I think I’ve had over 3 cases of it on my layovers.

Turkish in Istanbul often doesn’t have any Champagne available and if they do, it’s some generic no-name bulk stuff. The Istanbul lounge (and now lounges) are the most overrated loungs in the world. I never understood the appeal, and I’ve been there hundreds of times. (I’ve been TK Elite Plus for over 10 years now).

I should’ve specified, this was my 2021 flight.

lol krug and comtes with a mouthful of dicks.

imagine if an airline actually served dicks. man that would be comedic gold.

Did you bring that bag of Dicks with you? Did you know you’d have caviar to serve it with?

UAL Newark to Milan last year. Greeted onboard with unknown bubbles, then a glass of 2018 Cinq Cepages. When I asked for a refill, that was gone, so switched to 2019 Elizabeth Spencer Reserve cab.

Yeah. It was just after Berserker Day, so the shipment had just arrived. I knew I was flying first and would have caviar and thought, a bag of salty dicks wouldn’t be a bad idea. It’s a great pairing.

All I have to contribute is Canada Air Biz Class wines suck

I’ve never been to Doha. It was shortly after Turkish Air started its flights from IAH; sometime in 2013 IIRC. I am pretty sure that the Champagne was Krug then. The drinks in the lounge (as well as on board) went downhill subsequently. Last time I was there, around five years ago, it was no better than United Air lounges.

It’s almost always Prosecco for the pre-departure bubbly on UA. I usually tell them (on those limited occasions) I’ll wait for them to open the real Champagne - and pass on the “Champagne”.

I suspected as much. I kind of tossed it back without much thought. I was thirsty.

What do they pour once the Salon runs out?

This will probably get me black balled but …

Given the eye watering prices for first and ‘real’ business class, and impaired palates in the air … why bother? Yes the lounges make sense ( I once got into the Air France lounge at LHR by mistake (by the agent servicing Air Transat Club class lol ) and it was great. But seriously the premiums you pay would cover a very nice in a real restaurant at the destination.
Disclosure : I do fit into a standard seat.

For me the sweet spot is “premium economy” for easier check in etc, a bit more leg room and not giving up too many denarii.

I think most people probably aren’t paying full fare for it. Either it’s paid by an employer or they’re using points. I have a ton of Amex MR points which i only use for international premium class travel. I have zero complaints of what champagne, brown spirits, and sweet wines taste like in the air. Having a lay flat seat and especially a shower, are incredibly valuable especially if you have an early meeting soon after arrival.
