New York City, NY â September 10th, 2018 â Burgundy didnât take a vacation this summer in the minds of collectors worldwide, as demand for these Domaines continued unabated during Acker Merrallâs first auction of the Fall Season. The auction totaled over US$7 Million, led by the Amazing Collection of Wilf Jaeger, one of the Worldâs most renowned Burgundy connoisseurs, a collection that surged past its high estimate thanks to over 300 lots of the finest and rarest Burgundies within. An astounding 312 New World Records were set in this momentous sale, and all twenty-five of the top lots were from Burgundy. Almost one-third of all non-mixed lots set World Records, and the 312 lots represent a record number for Acker Merrall for any given sale. The sale set the stage for Ackerâs first Hong Kong auction of the Fall season on September 22, which features an extraordinary amount of wines from Domaine de la Romanee Conti.
All of the saleâs Top Ten Lots were from Burgundy; in fact, so were the Top 25. Rousseau took the top three spots, led by a unique 45-bottle vertical collection from 1964 to 2015 of Chambertin which sold for $124,000. That was followed by a twelve bottle OCB of 1990 Rousseau Chambertin selling for $93,000, and a extremely rare jeroboam of 1959 Rousseau Chambertin trading for $74,400. The Domaine de la Romanee Contiâs 1999 Assortment in banded OWC sold for $62,000, as did an OWC of 2009 Domaine Leroy Richebourg from the collection of Wilf Jaeger. His amazing collection was also the previous home for the two lots which followed, a twelve bottle lot of 1999 Henri for Georges Jayer Echezeaux bought for $55,800 and a 3-bottle banded OWC of the 2002 Romanee Conti which sold for $52,080. During a day of many sought after Dujac lots, the number eight slot was taken by a rare six magnum OWC of Dujac Chambertin selling for $47,120. Completing the dayâs Top 10 and the clean sweep for Burgundy was a Jeroboam of 1991 DRC La Tache at $44,640 and another rare Rousseau vertical collection, 34-bottles of Gevrey Chambertin Clos St. Jacques between 1964 and 2013 at $43,400.
The firmâs 312 New World Records was its highest total ever since tracking and almost one-third of the entire auctionâs non-mixed lots, an astounding amount. Domaine Dujac led the dayâs total with 26, while Leroy/dâAuvenay was a close second with 24. There were 11 records for Drouhin, 10 each for Rousseau and Ramonet, 8 too for both Roumier and DRC plus 6 each for dâAngerville and Roulot, showing the breadth and depth of demand up and down the Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune in Burgundy.
Thatâs correct Ray, it was called Dr Vino, single owner catâŚbut do you remember Kaponâs writeup about those winesâŚprovenance stuff? For the discussion, would be âinterestingâ to say the least.
JK had to back track bc there was already a dr vino blog. Lil story, I was talking to John Fox around that time as he had been bringing in the Siguen Moreauâs from the same period of those in that catalog. Fox advised me he didnât think all that much of them. And if you remember wilf supplied the wine list for that famous rest that Raj (sp?) was the somm at, so many odd/goofy lower-end stuff producersâŚseems like all the big players have stuff in their cellars theyâd like to dump on the auction market, imho. Kinda like when Bipin Desai invited me to his mega $1500 78 Bug tasting, that I declined & never got an invite from him again. Bipin had amassed a huge # of '78âs and it was 3day tasting, standing onlyâŚ<wft is up with that??? So many odd-ball producers, not talking about then relatively unknown to those who like me were not yet super knowledgeable, like Clair-dau, but really odd such that François Audouze might have wanted to try, but I certainly did not want to stand up tasting 150 burgs over 3day, most of them unknown. Told him, Iâd love to just pay something like $500 for just the top 10-20(Jayer, DRC, etc)âŚdonât recall if DRC RC was in the line upâŚmight still have the FAX of the lineup Bipin sent me circa 1993?. Oh, well that was then.
hmm, got to go upload my copy of the catalog cover, hereâs the wayback link:Acker Merrall & Condit - Catalogue Download

As far as the OP, his wines are not counterfeit, so if you want max profits, go for Acker HK for BordeauxâŚif youâve got a lot of those.
But as a buyer, steer clear of AckerâŚcan dig up some emails from them, JK in particular if, we want to trash talk like an Italian Brooklyn NYkrâŚhey wereâs that Italian from NY, trumpism> âLil Big Boyâ (nick like Lil Boy dropped on HiroshimaâŚkinda like an thermal nuclear big blast of hotair explosion overtook the wine world wine the lumber started to fall, lol). Big Boy used to buy, this is around that time, even after the Rudy sale, '82 Salon off of winecommune.com of quite dubious provenanceâŚI msg him on WC, about '74 Cristal Rose after reading what JK had posted, so I know it was the one and only KOC.
