Appreciated your note on 1965 Charles Krug. I love finding pristine bottles of Napa Cabs from the 1960s (especially if they come with a story like the one about Robert Mondavi)…sounds like you had a good one. Fantastic that you got to taste 1982 & 1983 Canon side-by-side and fascinating that the '83 came out on top. I’ve had some fabulous '83s recently, including Petrus, Margaux, and Palmer, and was surprised how good they’re looking now.

I have one more bottle of that 1965 Krug that I will pop on Wednesday, my actual birthday, with my father and my son. It was my father that introduced me to wine well over 35 years ago, and I think his first experience was Krug and Mondavi. I’ll get the full story from him on Wednesday because my memory is a little fuzzy, but he and his brother took a cross country road trip when they both graduated from their respective colleges and they visited some wineries in Napa, including these and Behringer. And it appears to have left some indelible memories on him.
I agree on the 1983s, I popped another like 2 weeks ago, a Gruaud Larose, which is just glorious.
I was called “flamboyant” during one of the toasts - which we all know to be a great exaggeration - so I did not think it apropos to post yet another striated leg selfie in cycling Lycra. There is only so much the hot sweaty masses can handle in this era! I mean what’s next, Mamdami and Trump will meet and hang out or something?!
It was a great night . That cake was amazing. When I first walked in I, thought it was a real bottle of wine. The food and wine were off the charts. Robert’s loving wife, Chris, asked us to come up with some funny stories about him to kind of roast him. That was not difficult and really got the toasts flowing. But a fantastic night with friends that have known each other for years, ridden many miles on the bike , and shared many bottles of wine. Loved the '65 Krug.
I popped a 12 mag for my birthday last year and it was super good. Super tight on first pop, but great after 3+ hours. Linear and precise and missing that uncuous maturity, sure, but everything in balance and not closed down at all.
