2006 Agostino Pavia Barbera d’Asti Bricco Blina- Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d’Asti (2/16/2009)
Pizza nuts rejoice, this is a wine made just for you! I don’t think I have had a wine that was better for pizza then this little $15 gem. The nose shows a nice strawberry and white pepper element mixed with a touch of a floral note. Fairly fruit forward with an excellent balance of acidity and weight. There’s not much of a finish and if you have some left over after the pizza, it just doesn’t seem to be nearly as good but hopefully you will pop it at your next pizza party and it won’t get that far. Now that’s good to know! I often search for a wine that goes well with pizza. It’s ironic that pizza is one of the most common food items, yet it seems difficult to find a wine to match it.
I am originally from NY and therefore, Pizza is a critical food source, even here in the pizza hinterlands of Seattle. I have always enjoyed these 3 specific wine types with pizza (in order of preference):
a. Dolcetto
b. Valpolicella
c. Barbera
Any of those 3 on any given “za night” in our house, seems to make for a great evening.
I may need to pass as the crowd I run with prefer Shafer, Buccella, Bond, Beringer Reserve, Forman, Justin Isos., Maybach, and Slaughterhouse Cab with their pizzas.
I never have understood the pairing of pizza and Cabernet Sauvignon. But then again, I have never been a fan of Cabernet Sauvignon with chocoate … whatsoever, so maybe it is just me.
