Do not be afraid, my name is not Rudy.
I am always excited to talk about an event before it is made because, when it is made, the genesis is forgotten.
I have a friend wine lover who is like me chasing oddities. As he lives in Lyon we do not meet so often. And when a date is chosen, we want to open our best bottles or our strange bottles. My friend Florent could be my son, as he is not even 40 years old, but he promises to become an expert in very old wines.
I have had the chance to buy 6 bottles of Champagne Heidsieck 1907 which stayed one century in the North Sea. I wanted that my first try would be with him.
I have also bought one day, I do not know why, a bottle of “Grand Corbin white 1924”. To my knowledge, Grand Corbin of the family Despagne in Saint-Emilion has never made white wine. And, why is it in a Burgundy bottle ? I wanted that such a curiosity would be drunk with him.
To that, I added a Champagne Moët & Chandon 1914, one of the greatest ever year for Moët, a wine which has been my epiphany for very old champagne some 30 years ago.
My friend Florent will bring : Château Palmer 1921, Richebourg 1923 Antonin Rodet and Château Rabaud-Promis 1921.
Then I remembered that I had met a Scottish man, same age as Florent, who collects wines and specially old champagnes. I talked to him about this dinner and he will bring Champagne Roederer 1928 and Champagne Mumm 1893.
Then I contacted a Japanese friend who has also a small but nice collection, who will bring Clos Vougeot Georges Roumier 1969 and Chambertin Armand Rousseau 1978.
To make the program complete, just for fun, I added one small bottle that I date before 1850, with a nice white color of wine seen through the dark glass. Is it a Constantia of South Africa, I do not know, but we will see.
So the list of the dinner to come in two days is :
Champagne Moët & Chandon 1914
Champagne Roederer 1928
Champagne Mumm 1893
Grand Corbin blanc 1924
Château Palmer 1921
Richebourg 1923 Rodet
Clos Vougeot Georges Roumier 1969
Chambertin Armand Rousseau 1978
Champagne Heidsieck 1907
Château Rabaud-Promis 1921
Supposed Constantia South Africa circa 1840
Needless to say that I am excited. And as for me an important moment is to have decided to create such a dinner, it explains why I send this message before the event.
Of course I will make a report.
