A Tasting with Peter Barry 9/18/09

  • 2005 Jim Barry Shiraz The Armagh - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (9/18/2009)
Always hard to judge a wine like this so young. Shows all the big fruit and silky elegance you’d expect to see. Not hard at all, but tight as a drum. Patience on this one, it will develop more over the next decade or two. (95 pts.)
  • 2004 Jim Barry Shiraz The McRae Wood - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (9/18/2009)
Big, jammy, supple Shiraz with balance and structure. Silky and dense on the palate with a long finish. Didn’t really take concise notes on this one, but it could easily go 5yrs before drinking. (93 pts.)
  • 2006 Jim Barry Shiraz The Lodge Hill - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (9/18/2009)
It was great to see Peter Barry today after many years. Great to catch up with an old friend and taste some non-spoofulated (a new word for Peter) family-made Aussie wines. Dark purple color. Nice nose of white pepper, black fruit, and vanilla. Solid core of fruit but still a little tightly wound with nice bracing tannin and minerality going on through the finish. A great value at $20 or so, showing depth, power, and balance. (91 pts.)
  • 2007 Jim Barry Shiraz The Lodge Hill - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (9/18/2009)
As many know the 2007 vintage was difficult in Australia, and Clare Valley was no exception. Coupled with the downturn in the global economy, Peter ended up putting about 70% of the juice that would normally go into the McRae Wood Shiraz into the 2007 Lodge Hill bottling instead. This shows bigger, denser, and more forward fruit than the 2006 but retains an intense aromatic character of violet, licorice, white pepper, vanilla, and jammy berry fruit. Plush and more forward than the 2006, this is really built for drinking now. (91 pts.)
  • 2008 Jim Barry Riesling The Lodge Hill - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (9/18/2009)
Light but intense aromatic nose of pineapple, petrol, and flowers. Crisp and soft on the palate, a light and elegant mouthfeel that continues with notes of lime citrus and finishes with a potent mineral bite. (89 pts.)
