My friends and partners were over Tuesday to celebrate both of our birthdays. We started with Krug NV extended age thingy. I can’t remember the name but it is delicious. THen while we waited for my wife to come home from work we popped an 09 Lafarge Volnay VS. Very good and really drinking well. This surprised me a bit. I was expecting it to be too rich.
Made a grilled ceaser salad with toasted breadcrumbs. Delicious and will be on our menu. Then a mixed grill of Bison Ribeye, prime NY and Duroc pork loin. Again excellent. Then we moved into the following.
-
1966 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru (11/24/2015)
A killer wine. Red fruit and barnyard mix with minerality that I always find in the best Musigny. Elegant but well balanced. Tannic backbone was present but not out of balance. Great length and seemed to be at it’s peak but no signs of decline. -
1989 Château La Mission Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (11/24/2015)
Another great wine. Wonderful depth and the best finish of the night. Black fruit and graphite still prominent. fantastic wine just to sit and smell. I loved this one. -
1993 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru (11/24/2015)
Color was still black and at first the nose needed to be coaxed some. We decanted and came back to this later. Opened a bit after an hour. Deep rich and expansive. clearly a great wine that still needs 10 to 20 years. Amazing. I find most 93’s open for my taste so I was quite surprised.
