With the recent rash of Jay Miller getting bashed for ethical rating practices…har har har…I decided to open an Aussie Shiraz that was highly rated by RMP before he handed the Land Down Under over to the good doctor. Wine was popped and poured and consumed with a cheese and cured meat platter by the illumination of a Mag-Lite flashlight as the power was out in half of Irving last night.
Even though the wine is six years old, it is still dense and dark purple. Upon opening, it had a dusty and old nose without any fruit coming through…not corked. After about thirty minutes, it came around to reveal a great nose of blueberries, oak, bacon fat and smoke. Palate was very concentrated with black pepper, asian spice, dark fruits and finish that last almost a minute.
This isn’t one of the over-the-top wines recently to come out of Australia, but rather a very well put together bottle of juice that more than delivers the goods. Too bad the new wines aren’t all fashioned like this one.
