We are selling MORE bottles to MORE people for LESS money (folks are drinking more but trading down). A curious side effect is that, since a lot of under $12 or so wines (especially SPANISH ones) come in quite flimsy boxes (often without dividers) as they are not intended to be stored for long periods of time, we are having a VERY hard time coming up with enough solid boxes to use in the store when folks buy mixed cases.
If we have to go out and BUY wine cases I am going to go crazy. Anyone else having this problem?
not having quite the same problem, but noticed that a large amount of value wines from Spain, Argentina, Chile, and some Italians come in flimsy boxes with no dividers. To compensate, some of our guys will use the tops as a semi-divider. Not a total solution, but it helps.
Some of those boxes just implode after opening. bleh
Dinner at Grace was amazing. OMG! The wines were utterly gorgeous, and the food was prepared especially to match the wines. From start to finish, everything was outstanding, cannot say enough good things about it. Check out the LA Offline for June 12th thread.
It was very nice to meet you at the store! Thanks for the rec, and looking forward to opening that Barolo!
Max, that is what is keeping MOST stores alive these days. But, I see a general trend towards cost cutting on cases even in nicer wines and this is going to be a big problem for stores like ours where the average sale is a mixed case plus or minus four bottles.
AND, it is going to make all of those people who are NOT our customers but want boxes “you were going to throw away anyway” to help them move even more desperate!
Delivery drivers pick up empty boxes to bring back to the distributor/Warehouse, ask your drivers if they have any empty boxes on board and that you could use some next time they deliver.
