A "La Tache" from Spain

I don’t think I need to add additional commentary to what is already in this thread:

It’s deja vu all over again. [popcorn.gif]

The note on K&L’s site is just precious - it reads like the winning submission in a contest to mimic an RP note.

Notes which make analogies by saying a wine is a “dead ringer for La Tache” and the like are really unfortunate and, I believe, confuse one’s readership. It gets people whipped up, and they go out and buy the “imitation.” Bob said one vintage of a Peter Michael PN was a “dead ringer for La Tache.” I brought the wine to my wine group, and we tasted it. Folks were shocked at the comments as no one thought it bore any resemblance to a Burgundy (it was VERY New World like), let alone a La Tache.

When you see phrases like that, run for the hills as they say.

If someone thinks an alcoholic Mencia, Domaine Serene, Brewer Clifton, Riunite, Sierra Nevada or anything else equally distinct tastes like La Tache or Monfortino or Latour or Le Mesnil or whatever, it invariably says more about the taster than the beverage in question.

Mencia? WTF?

A ridiculous assertion. it’s like saying one discovered the greatest heavy metal band from Uruguay who sound just like the Beatles.

I actuallyy don’t buy Big Lumber or whatever statement that he does not know of Dr J.

Good stuff.

Well… except for this bit:

Exhibit #1:

Nevertheless, I am able to recognize the otherwise worthiness of the 2 or 3 wines i indicated above (as examples, clearly there are others), notwithstanding the fact I am NOT otherwise a drinker of that type of wine regularly.

On the positive side, he’s clearly well-qualified for a fallback career writing software EULAs.

I don’t get the whole point of the thread. Is it to remind everyone how great BURGUNDY is? Or is it to slam poor Dr. J? [scratch.gif]

I guess the answer is here:

this wine was attrocious and even though it isn’t my style to be rated in the category of these other wines listed heretofore is impossible regardless of your scale

That quote is like the writing of a hypothetical blend of an LSD-deranged F Scott Fitzgerald and a cocaine-adjusted Earnest Hemingway with a touch of an insulin-deficient Maya Angelou.

Rob Rosania needs to realize he’s no Audoze. Both have hideous amounts of money, but only one has the class not to write “Romanee Conti is the Greatest Wine in the World” in his sig. (Most people’s cars cost less than a single bottle of this stuff from any vintage.)

Considering the hoopla over there anytime someone disagrees with Big Jay, I have a hard time believing he’s never heard of him. Frankly, part of the note sounded like a troll to show how he felt about BJ’s palate.

Comparing Mencia to Pinot Noir is like comparing apples to oranges, and does a disservice to the reader. That’s like saying “this little Yugo has pep and reminds me of a Lamborghini Murcielago.” Yeah, right. What were you smoking when you made the comparison? Unless the wine is exactly like La Tache, you should not be saying it reminds you of La Tache. And honestly, having tasted tons of Mencia in Spain last summer, Big Jay’s off his freaking rocker. He needs a tongue replacement.

Josh says :

So many people think they may write valuable comments about a wine that they have drunk maybe only once !

I like Wilfred running on the hills ! He knows this wine since, as a happy successfull Man, he has some (!) in his cellar

flirtysmile

I also didn’t know who Dr. J was but I am barely a twig on the forest floor.

I wish Rob would have given a few notes on the wine other than the one about it being alcohol.

It seems so many wines these days are just alcohol and sweet fruit to the point that I wonder if my nose is shot.

Well, that’s really the point. I’ve never met Big Lumber, so whether he knew of JSM before the tasting makes no difference to me. But if the story is true, this is what happens when professional wine critics do things like make analogies to La Tache. Some schmuck reads the review, and thinks “I’m getting a 98 point wine for under $100 and it’s like La Tache. What a deal!” There was no reason at all to mention La Tache in the review–it’s just likely to confuse people…

Bruce

Bruce,

Rob’s comments are much more harsh than the wine not being comparable to La Tache although I agree there is no point for Dr. J to make the comparison. Rob did not think it deserved 98 points on a 200 point scale!! It doesn’t sound like the comparison to la tache is the real issue for consumers. Is it really a 98 point wine or not? I guess I won’t find out…

I posted over there asking what specifically he did not like about the wine.

i was thinking the same thing. i’ve never understood the school of thought over TWA where highly-rated wines need to be compared to Famous wines in order to get the point across. there’s a written review and a numerical score – each serve their purpose and including additional info about “a hypothetical blend of Famous X and Famous Y” is just lazy and pandering.

And in this case, irresponsible.

rosania drinks better than audoze by an order of magnitude. no contest. and i don’t think he charges for his dinners.

Nick,

I’m relatively sure Rob has never said he was an “Audouze” nor would he want to be.
If you are going to make comments on an internet board (personally I prefer face to face), at least have the “class” to make them on a venue that the person you are insulting will read so they can respond.

whats with you yaacov, everywhere i go i’m reduced to saying…
