A great little '02 Volnay one year later!

  • 2002 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (6/7/2014)
PNP, crimson color. Very much like a year ago except the palate seemed a tiny bit leaner this time. That said, still great soil tones on both the nose and palate like last time. Possibly slightly closed too but most 02s have been pretty open for business. The nose was great. Just a smidge less pleasure from the palate this time vs. what I remember last time. Still, an awesome value and a very elegant feather weight Burg with no signs of heavy handed, modern tampering. Just a glaringly lovely expression of Volnay terroir. I think this wine has likely reached a long plateau of peak drinking. Happily, 2 more btls to find out. Great value at $36 per. (91 pts.)

What a find! Very pretty translucent crimson color with a trace of amber on the edges. Popped the cork, poured and fell in love with perfuse aromas of soil & spice. One the great pleasures of Burgundy is a nose like this. Sipping this before dinner I found it hard not to drain it. This is a red fruited wine of exemplary Burgundian finesse & class. Perfect weight and caressing texture. Plenty of acid makes this feel vibrant and fresh. Love the strawberry, soil and sour cherry flavors. At the $30 I paid this was a total steal for an '02 Volnay 1er Cru! (92 pts.)

I love this wine. I regret only buying 6 when it was $29, then only reloading another half dozen at $39. I just ordered some of the '07 from Envoyer.
I hadn’t heard of this vineyard before trying the '02’s. Here’s a map showing its location:
