A fine 2004 from Roty!

The more time passes, the less I like the 2004 Red Burg Vintage.
So it’s refreshing to find one I can compliment…

2004 Roty Gevrey Chambertin "Fontenys"
I’m a big fan of Roty’s wines and the Fontenys in particular.
This vineyard possibly contains the oldest vines in Burgundy according to JG.
Healthy, medium-dark red with touch of amber at the edge. (So many 2004s have onion skin at such an early stage).
Clean nose of smoke, black olives and spicy black fruits.
Interesting, elegant, spicy, old viney, earthy fruit with a firm raspberry finish.
It kept improving with time. Drinking well for such a young Fontenys!
A solid wine devoid of the Greenies! It’s a buy at the $35-$55 price range.

P.S. That this wine is so drinkable early is not typical. Just reinforces my opinion that the 2004s should be drunk up!

Great to read… I have a few of Roty’s Gevrey lieu dits from '04 that I’ve been afraid to open.

Same thing goes for the 04 Roty Gevrey Champs Chenys. Lovely stuff and fully approachable.

Good note Paul! Same thing here for 2004 Joseph Roty Gevrey Chambertin Clos Prieur! Tasted several of the village level Roty’s from 2004, good quality for the price.

Fear no longer !!!

Pound away Matey! ARRGG…

We had the '04 Charmes Chambertin TVV in a vintage lineup, and unfortunately it looked very, very '04…a good reason to drink these wines (04’s) in isolation I think…
