2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/14/2012)
Sweet citrus on the nose with mild petrol that blows off on day two. The palate is intense, thick and wound up tight with very nice honeyed citrus and great acid. A baby but what a baby. I have yet to have a Prum I didn’t like a lot.

2007 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Annum - USA, California, Napa Valley (1/14/2012)
Great nose of chocolate, olives, beef and very dark brooding fruit. The palate is tight and stingy with notes of cocoa, wisps of very dark fruit and significant oak. Clearly a premature death. Shame on me. The pedregals will sleep but I like what I see.

2000 Penfolds Grange - Australia, South Australia (1/11/2012)
I brought this to WD50 since the menu is eclectic and I wanted a wine that would shine for itself. It did not disappoint. Even if I’ve had the wine before I often find myself wondering if I’m going to think an expensive wine will be worth the money to me when I finally get to drink it. Well, the nose alone was worth the price of admission. Powerful and beguiling. Strong notes of black licorice, ripe berries, soy sauce and raw beef were supported by hints of earth and mushrooms. The palate had interesting dark berries, mild crushed pepper, baking spices more soy and very harmonious citrusy acidity, but what made it brilliant was the perfectly seamless velvety texture. A long plush finish completed the picture but I did get a mild waft of heat on some sips which was the only complaint I had about the wine. An amazing experience. Thankful to have younger ones in the cellar and encouraged by the fact that this one has decades ahead of it.

2005 Jessup Cellars Table For Four - USA, California, Napa Valley (1/9/2012)
A little green on the nose with some rhubarb, black licorice and some black fruits. The palate is medium in weight and dominated by black licorice and plum. Nice acid. Still some fairly firm tannins. I like it.

2008 Roar Syrah Garys’ Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (1/6/2012)
The nose is tight with some smokey notes and roasted black fruit. A hint of game. The palate is also tight but shows some roasted meat hints, brighter fruits, a little baking spice and a hint of green. Young and brawny. Nice but needs time to loosen up.
