2006 Carlisle Syrah Sonoma County - USA, California, Sonoma County (9/28/2009)
15.1% alcohol. Decanted for one hour before serving. Dark red-purple color. Excellent blueberry-driven fruit in the nose with a touch of meaty earthiness. In the mouth, powerful and concentrated, with plenty of blue fruits that are supported by earthy, almost floral, complexity. Good acidity. Long finish. Just solid value all the way around. A- -
2006 Copain Syrah Garys’ Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (9/25/2009)
14.6% alcohol. Double-decanted one hour prior to serving and drunk over another three hours. Aromatically really pretty right now. Soaring nose of peppery blue and black fruits, a hint of creamy oak, deep earth notes, and a meaty edge to it. In the mouth, however, it is really shut down and almost ferocious. Plenty of blue and black fruit, married with loads of complexity, but they take a back seat to the structure at this point. There is a whole-cluster stemmy note, strong acidity, and substantial tannins on the finish. This is a really lovely wine but it’s going to need significant patience. Unlike the Hawk’s Butte 2006, which is showing quite well, the Garys’ needs the cellar time. There is a lot of gorgeous material to wait for, though. A- -
2006 Copain Syrah Hawks Butte Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Yorkville Highlands (9/21/2009)
14.6% alcohol. Double decanted. Deep plum/purple color. Beautiful nose of blueberry, meat, forest floor, and a bit of creamy oak. In the mouth, quite plush and really enjoyable even this young. Loads of fruit up front, with sturdy complexity backing it up. Strong acidity and a long finish that has well-integrated tannins. A- -
2003 Arcadian Syrah Stolpman Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley (9/11/2009)
15.0% alcohol. A bit of funk on the nose initially. This blew off, revealing a ripe, plush, focused Syrah. The emphasis was on fruit all the way. A meaty edge grabbed the blue and black fruit profile, along with rich earth notes. Good acidity. Long finish with some tannic muscle. This was lacking just slightly compared to previous bottles. A-
