I was a little concerned that both of these wines would be tough to drink given how young they both are, so I was pleasantly surprised at how well they showed.
The 2002 Jadot Rugiens showed some spritz at first, but it settled down almost immediately. It seemed more feminine and “pretty” than the Potel - with florals and pine needle notes leading into sappy pomegranate and high-toned fruit. There’s some citrus fruit mixed in and finishes on a light cocoa/chocolate note. Very polished and round - tannins arent intrusive - the Pommard Gods were smiling.
The 2005 Potel Rugiens bouquet seemed more serious, with intense/brooding dark fruit and a thread of sous bois. The midpalate started off a little hollow but fleshed out and gained weight with aeration. The tannins seemed to increase with air though - by the end of the bottle it was quite tough. Should be a nice bottle in time, but I’d hold off drinking this one for now.
The biggest surprise is that Tyler Rico said he liked these. There’s still hope for the kid.
