A couple of tasting notes after a long hiatus

Hi y’all, been a long time since I’ve checked in here and I hope all my friends are well. For some reason I haven’t felt compelled to squawk on any number of memorable wines I’ve had over the last year or so since I last visited, mostly because realistically you would find these very difficult to find or buy. But I just had a couple of superb drinkers in the last couple of weeks I thought worth a post as they’re all available and right at about $20/ bottle and a legitimate 92 points.

Roederer Estate Brut- they had them on sale here for $15/ bottle over Xmas. You won’t find a better bottle of bubbles for the money, period…Nuffield said. Easily a ringer for the real deal and damn near as good as the Brut Premier from the French parent for less than 1/2 the price. If you need to break out a case for a wedding or an unsophisticated group, this would be my instant go to sparkler.

Dow 2006 LBV. I’ve always been a fan of the drier house style of Dow and this lBV is another crazy QPR as is the whole LBV category. Got this for $15.99 a bottle plus shipping. Big, juicy, lush and plush and very big notch better than a Bin 27 or other base Ruby Ports for the same tariff. May replace Broadbent 10 yr Madeira as my cigar go to.

Roederer Estate 2007 Pinot Noir. Who knew? I toured Anderson Valley last fall and stopped by Roederer for a tour and a tasting. I didn’t even know they did a Pinot there. They told me they only make it in certain vintages and you may only find it from the winery direct, but damn, honestly this may be the best $20 Pinot I’ve ever had, at least tonight:-) seriously good juice with concentration, Pinot typicity and character you’d expect from a wine at twice the price. Great drinker for when the Pinot mood strikes and you don’t want to spend much. Pinot, Burg or Domestic is I think a pretty difficult category at the $20 price point but this one breaks the mold.

Now if you want to read about the 1980 Romanee Conti, the 83 Ponsot CDLR, Cristal mini vertical etc…well I’ll save that for another day. Hope to see some of you at the Paulee in a few weeks.
A Votre Sante
Mitch

Welcome back Mitch.

p.s. love those Roederer Estate wines. Great QPR.

Mitch,
MOST of the wines I read about here are difficult for me to find or buy. I do a lot of vicarious living, so I say “Welcome back and POST UP!”

Yes Mitch please post. I was just wondering what happened to a few of the old Ebob burg guys.

Slacker! Razzing of course! Hey, why don’t you post about our 2007 CdP tasting last Sat. at Jeb’s? What a slutty stunner! Wish I had the time, but I’m rallying and packing for Telluride Ski, Wine & Dine and prepping for all the madness that’s about to be unleashed in that spectacular mountain mecca!

Nice notes, Mitch, and welcome back…

I would like to see your take (Mitch and Rico) on those 2007 CDPs! “Slutty” wines don’t seem to be what either of you go for, so if you liked 2007 CDPs, there may be hope for them after all (my limited tasting of 'em has ranged from excellent-to-undrinkable). What was the line-up?

good to hear from you, Mitch.

Hi Mitch,

Nice to see you around these parts again. Welcome back.

Al

Patrick, details belong in another thread, but the 2007 CdP night line-up was:

96 Salon

Rayas
Pignan
Les Cailloux Cuvee Centenair

Les Clos du Calloux Reserve
Clos des Papes
Pegau

Usseglio Reserve Deux Freres
Boisrenard
Mordoree Reine des Bois

Slutty is a relative term.

Great minds. This was my wedding reception bubbly. [cheers.gif]
And perhaps it will be again.

And welcome back.
