A Couple of Nice 2000 Bordeaux Tastes (Cos & Cantemerle)

These wines were enjoyed at our blind tasting last Friday:

  • 2000 Château Cos d’Estournel - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (10/16/2009)
    Tasted in double-blind fashion with our Friday tasting group. Bottle provided by **** *******, who had purchased the wine upon release and cellared it in pristine fashion. Opaque purple with ruby rim. Clean, very intense primary nose of black currants, fennel, exotic spices, menthol and minerals. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, generous silky tannins and black fruit-dominated flavors. The middle is full and the smooth finish is very long. Although quite pleasant now, this wine is still a baby which needs several more years to fully strut its stuff. Drink 1/15-12/30. (95 pts.)
  • 2000 Château Cantemerle - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc (10/16/2009)
    This wine was double-decanted prior to presenting it in double-blind fashion to our tasting group. The bottle had been purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion. The wine was allowed to see one hour in decanter prior to funneling back into the bottle, then was serially tasted from another decanter over a two-hour period. My taste was unblinded. Interestingly, another taster brought the 2000 Cos d’Estournel. Opaque red/garnet with garnet rim. Clean, quite intense nose of plums, exotic spices and leather. Medium-to-full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, medium sweet tannins and flavors which mirror the nose. The middle palate is full and the finish is smooth and medium-length. This is quite a nice wine which is drinking well now. In contrast, the 2000 Cos d’Estournel is still a baby which will need more time, but definitely eclipses this wine in quality. This Cantemerle should continue to be enjoyable for at least another 5-7 years. Drink now-12/16. (90 pts.)
