A couple of great QPR 1er Burgs from Potel

picked both of these bottle up last week from KL for $28 and $30… Both are fantastic for the $$…

  • 2006 Nicolas Potel Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru (8/3/2009)
Purchased for $28 and at that price, this is a steal. A few days ago I had another great 1er Cru Potel which was just a couple dollars more but this one outshone that one by a bit. Popped and poured and served with some Chinese food. A little more fruit showing on the nose then the previously mentioned wine and this one has a nice racy edge to it with slightly better fruit on the palate as well. Excellent wine for the money. I’ll certainly pick up a few more of both bottles this week. (91 pts.)
  • 2006 Nicolas Potel Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Marconnets - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (8/1/2009)
I’ve yet to be disappointed by a wine from Nicolas Potel. The nose is subtle with some soft cherry scents framed by a touch of earth and herbal spice notes. Very smooth and elegant with a mild chalky feel towards the finish. What surprised me the most about this wine was that it performed really well with the Indian chicken dish we had for dinner. I really thought that the spice, which was relatively mild for Indian food but still a little bit strong, would overpower the wine but it did not and everything was actually quite tasty. At $29, this is a great value 1er Cru red Burgundy. (90 pts.)

thanks for the notes Rob! grabbed two bottles of the Santenay from KL. Love their golden state overnight shipping!

I have yet to be disappointed by a Burg from Potel.

Dammit Rob,

That’s going to cost me some cash.

Thanks for the notes.

Rob,
Thanks for the tips on these. I’ve never had any Potel Santenay, so that’s good to know. And I’m with you on the Marconnets, nice stuff.

Cheers,
-Robert

Just save a few for me.

Awesome notes, Rob. These sound well worth seeking out.

I guess you aren’t close enough to the Hollywood store to pick them up there?

I saw Bill Nanson’s recent Burgundy report yesterday and it looks like Potel is cracking up post-2007 vntage. Corporate entity fired N. Potel.

If you had posted this two days ago I was right down the street… but I live about 1 hour away without traffic =(.

Might pass by the redwood store on the way to napa, but shipping is only $10 for 4 bottles so no biggy. With GSO they don’t even give the wine to the courier till 5ish and it arrives before 10am so I think it’ll be fine. crosses fingers

thanks for the notes and recommendations. i am such sheep, got a couple from K&L
