A couple of '99 Mosels

It seems like this is not a particularly loved vintage, but I found a lot to like in these two.

  • 1999 Sybille Kuntz Lieser Niederberg-Helden Riesling Dreistern Spätlese trocken - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (12/3/2013)
From a bottle which had clearly been a leaker at some point in the past, but with a very good fill. Starts quite disjointed and shows tertiary and tired for the first couple of hours, but just as I was starting to give up on it the wine came in the focus and showed the typical balance, elegance and minerality that make Sybille Kuntz’s wines among my favorite dry Rieslings. Never austere and always with balanced alcohol - the perfect trockens for someone who loves their Rieslings with some RS. This particular bottle shows a lot of vegetal tones and good clean finish with long lasting citrus notes. Very moreish. (90 pts.)
  • 1999 Jos. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm) Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (12/2/2013)
Petrol notes and Asian pear on the nose. Still a lot of RS on the palate but this has plenty of lively acids to balance it out. Peaches, pears and cotton candy on the palate. Good minerality and length. Tasty! This is still drinking quite primary and has a very long life ahead. (91 pts.)
