A couple from Chile inc. 05 Almaviva

Wines opened last night with Pork Rib Cap dinner.

  • 2005 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva - Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto (10/3/2009)
My first crack at the 05 Almaviva. Great nose of cherry, blueberries, some chocolate and spice. Thick and chewy but wound up tightly at this point. Started to come around and show really nice fruit near the end of the bottle. Should have decanted this and if I decide to open another I certainly would give it about 3-4 hours in the decanter. It’s got all the greatness I’ve come to expect from Almaviva but give it some time to come together. Tons of potential. 93-94. (93 pts.)
  • 2005 Viña Quebrada de Macul Cabernet Sauvignon Domus Aurea Clos Quebrada de Macul - Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley (10/3/2009)
Very dark color with a definite herbal streak on the nose mixed with some stony earth and cocoa. Medium bodied with nice fruit on the palate. In fact, probably more fruit then you would expect after testing the nose. As another CT taster mentioned, this is a very terroir driven wine and it reminds me of the Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon quite a lot. Finishes with a good dose of tannins on the back end. I suspect that this should age quite well for another 5 or more years. (91 pts.)

Hi Rob,
Have you had the 03 Almaviva? Better or worse than the 05?
Thanx for the note and reference point on the 05.
Lou [thankyou.gif]

Lou,

I’ve had the 03 4 different times over the last 3 years. It’s probably my favorite of the 03-05 vintage range but I think the 05 isn’t that far behind it.

'03 Almaviva is better than the '05 IMHO.

FWIW, I also like the '03 Don Melchor vs. the '05 DM. And on that note, I have found that since '99, I have enjoyed the odd vintages of both far more than the evens…go figure.

Bill - I’ve noticed as well that I’ve enjoyed all of the odd # vintages of DM, Clos Apalta, and Almaviva over their even # counterparts.

Thanks guys!
I also loved the 03 but haven’t popped an 05 yet…
I’ll pop one soon and post a note.
Lou
