1998 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill Brut - France, Champagne (9/5/2009)
A tremendous nose. On the fruity side for sure but not without subtleties. I smell apples and apples and apples and yeast. The palate is lively and fruity. Showing very young but doesn’t have any real edges. Very good but not like the 1995 or 96. (91 pts.)
2008 Grey Stack Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Rosemary’s Block - USA, California, North Coast, Bennett Valley (9/5/2009)
I have heard murmuring about these Sauv Blancs so it was a nice surprised to see this popped at dinner. The Grey Stack’s aromatics were like a pear bomb and had richness that I am not used to with SB. A slight grassy element but this showed mostly primary fruit. On the palate tropical fruits and sweetness. I am assuming this is not completely dry. My wife tasted mine and was glad I had poured her the Aubert because she said quote, “I don’t like sweet wine”. But I am enjoying this. I doubt I would guess this was Sauv Blanc but I enjoyed the fruit and richness. By the end of the evening the mouth-feel becomes too much. Being so full bodied combined with the sweetness wore me out. But this has a lot going on for a Sauv Blanc. (88 pts.)
2007 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (9/5/2009)
Obviously young. Not sure Auberts will make old bones but I have preferred Auberts with at least a few more years on them. The aromatics are intensely rich with a saline quality. The palate hits way to hard and heavy for me. Like a mouth full of rich apples (if there is such a thing). The wine is also a bit salty. The acidity is there but it can’t compete with all the fat at the moment. Kind of pointing out the flaws but the just seemed to be sticking out at the moment. But despite these issues we did find pleasure in the wine. Certainly has a lot of stuffing. I would probably be left feeling much more positive if it wasn’t for the searing heat. (86 pts.)
