A couple of beauties for a pre-Christmas lunch.
1997 Coche-Dury Meursault: So much struck match and toast to the nose. With air you get preserved lemon, grilled nuts and almond butter. It is heading into tertiary territory with a hint of white mushroom and the palate is relatively lean through the mid. There’s butterscotch development without the sweetness, and so much salt, citrus and chalk to the finish. Drinking at the top of its game.
1979 Pétrus: A beautiful bottle and firing on all cylinders from first pour. A striking nose of violets, cedar, spiced plum and cassis. The palate still has well defined fruit flavours, a hint of meatiness and some earth. It is complex and layered, full and complete. Structural elements still carry the long finish. Mid-weight Petrus of impeccable balance and serious engagement.
