'73 Riscal, Pineau d'Aunis and other recent drinks . . .

  • 2005 La Grapperie Coteaux du Loir Adonis - France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Coteaux du Loir (11/16/2009)
Medium to light red, red/rose. Clear, but not bright. Tangy, zesty and savory. Agave predominates. Flavors are very well-delineated and quite distinct. Surprisingly, showing even better than a bottle drank in 2007. I wouldn’t have guessed these would improve with time. (90 pts.)
  • 2000 Castello di Verduno Barbaresco Faset - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (11/14/2009)
Clear with a bit of bricking at the rim. Aromatics pronounced and complex, with tar and ripe plums and some alcohol dominant. Tar and plum on the flavors, too, with some heat. Partially disjointed, with some rough tannins. May improve with some time, but a little hard to drink right now. (86 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine du Vissoux / Pierre-Marie Chermette Beaujolais Cuvée Traditionalle - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais (11/12/2009)
Sometimes when I open a BoJo, on first sip I think I made a mistake. I almost never feel that way at the end of the bottle. Tighter than the '05, but bracing, minerally and refreshing. Great drinker. (89 pts.)
  • 2006 Mas del Perie Cahors Malbec - France, Southwest France, Cahors (11/7/2009)
Who says you can’t find a decent red for under $15? Grippy cranberry fruit with bordelaise impressions. Very good. (89 pts.)
  • 1973 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja (10/26/2009)
Clear with just a bit of browning. Caramel and cola on opening that gave way to sour cherry fruit and mild spice. Became more youthful seeming in the hour or so it was open. Unique and quite nice. Purchased at a wine shop in Barcelona and drank that night. (88 pts.)
  • 2005 Domaine de Mignaberry Irouléguy - France, Southwest France, Pays Basque, Irouléguy (10/26/2009)
In a very good place right now. Expressive nose immediately upon opening. Relatively rich palate with good grip. (90 pts.)
  • 2006 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Clio - Spain, Murcia, Jumilla (10/24/2009)
Yeegads. Sweet and alcoholic. DNPIM. (78 pts.)
  • 2006 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia - Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore (10/24/2009)
Ripe, concentrated modern wine that could be from anywhere. Nothing offensive about it, and OK if you like plush, soft and fairly simple–i.e., just ripe fruit-- flavors. Do these develop more character as they age? Because right now this just isn’t very interesting. Price is totally irrational. (88 pts.)

Nice notes.

Where’d you find the Mignaberry Irouléguy?

Sorry I missed your post, Zak. We had that in a Basque restaurant around the corner from the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. About 18 euros IIRC.

Even better!

Seeing the Cahors reference, reminds me that Paul Strangs new book on South West France is out. $37 from Amazon.
