I wanted to support the small store down the street who mostly sells wine from smaller wineries. Glancing at most of the labels, you might accuse them of being a hipster shop, though I do find it well curated (They have bedrock old vine zin) and a distinct lack of “natty wines”.
They did, however, have some super cool weird wine that I bought as I found it very appropriate for America’s 250th.
From Commonwealth Crush Co in Waynesboro, VA - Joy School Chardonel. From Astor’s website: “A natural and cloudy dry white made from the hybrid grape Chardonel, a cross between Seyval and Chardonnay. This was 10% whole cluster fermented, and spent 10 months on the lees in fiberglass. Aromas of herbs, fresh grape, and stone fruits, this will pair well with a park charcuterie board.”
I had one last week and was like “I’m from VA, I’m rootin’ for the VA wine region, and this is actually decent”
So I got two more.
Got some Three Sticks Durell Vineyard Pinot Noir - a bunch of vintages like 03, 05, 09, and 11, to pop. Also got some Rhys Pinot Noir from 2013 kickin’ around. I will be keeping it decidedly American.
We’re going to the tall ship parade in the harbor tomorrow morning. Kicks off at the Verrazzano bridge. Cannons firing from Fort Hamilton. Should be awesome. Happy 4th/250th everyone.
