Last night we met with Laura Chancellor and Larry Archibald at 315 Restaurant and Wine Bar to celebrate our 47th Anniversary. We started with a darkly colored, but crisp, minerally, and acidic, 1999 Raveneau Chablis ‘Butteaux’ with a half dozen each freshly shucked oysters from a bay in Washington state. They were medium in size and very rich and flavorful with a spicy shallot-vinegar mignonette and a little prepared horseradish. Second course was a nice, rich tuna crudo on avocado sauce. With the tuna we had a 1988 Aleth Girardin Pommard Rugiens - its dark rich fruit and adequate acidity were very good with the crudo. Third course was a nice poached grouper on a balsamic sauce with fried green onions, which was enjoyable with both the Pommard and a 2000 Jos. Drouhin Chassagne-Montrachet ‘Marquis de Laguiche’ - much lighter in color than the Chablis, rich white and yellow fruits and adequate acidity.
Fourth course was half a Maine lobster each. The lobster was served on a rich lobster-brandy sauce. The lobster with less of the sauce was terrific with the Chassagne; with more of the sauce it was better with the Pommard. Fifth course was a rare loin lamb chop with a truffled red wine lamb sauce and asparagus. With the lamb we had a 1967 Borgogno Barolo - cork saturated less than a half inch; very youthful in color; rich red and dark fruit, with tar, leather, and spice; still fairly primary; with a long spicy fruit finish. Larry thought that the Barolo had been held in barrels at the winery until shortly before he bought it a few years ago.
Then we had a nice cheese plate for each couple for dessert. The three cheeses - blue, semi-soft, and hard, were enjoyed with a half bottle of 1988 Chateau Climens Barsac -rich yellow fruit, little sweetness, with a long finish.
Carollee said sometime near the end of the meal “It doesn’t seem like 47 years”. I responded “Time flies when you are having fun”. ![]()
