Fabulous dinner at fermentAsian last night for Heidi’s birthday. All four wines were in scintillating form.
2005 Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé: Has some biscuit and brulee to the aroma at first. Really builds in the glass showing a little citrus rind, plenty of mineral, red fruits and flora. It is rich and round with good power and outstanding length.
2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières: Magnificent wine. Engaging nose of white flowers, white peach, citrus, minerals and spice. It has real depth and volume and that razor sharp spine you get with great Perrières. It is so powerful yet with an airy feel in the mouth and length is outstanding.
1985 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Roncières: Complex aromatics of smoke, root vegetables, meat, brown sugar and earth. It has that lovely vinous sweetness that you get in a perfectly mature ’85. It is ethereal and engaging with just a gentle flex of muscle on the back-end to remind you that its Nuits.
1968 Giacomo Conterno Barolo: I opened this about 10 hours earlier, took the wine off its sediment with a decant and had a small taste. It was very pretty and quite delicate and I decided to get it back in the bottle and put a fresh cork in. It was fabulous when we drank it. The nose offered up all sorts of earthy/savoury things as well as your classic decaying rose smell. There were notes of lipstick, paisley fruits, earth and beef stock. It had some dried fruits and little tar. It wasn’t overly powerful but had such presence in the mouth and possessed real persistence.
