Yet magnums are more than 2x 750? One bottle. One label. One cork.
See post 54.
I talked to a friend that owns a winery…he said the cost of a TCA (guaranteed free) cork for a 3L was $18/cork. The price for supplies goes up & down based on the quantity that a business can buy. They are not likely buying Magnum bottles in the same quantity as 750s. So the cost is passed along to the customer…not at a profit…just the difference in cost. After seeing his invoices for supplies…I’ve never questioned the difference in price for mags or 375s.
Kirk the costs of the corks, foil and labels, are the same. I do not know for certain, but I question, if a mag bottle is much more than 2xs the cost of a 750.
Foil, cork and labels are not necessarily the same for 750s and 1.5s.
Some mags are also hand filled, hand corked and hand capsuled which is slow and tedious.
For glass, the best answer is “it depends” but on several BOLs I’ve seen, 1.5 glass is more than double 750 glass.
while not always the case, in certain instances i have purchased magnums at less than 2x the 750ml cost and also 375mls at less than half the 750ml cost. i can see the reasoning behind a small premium for magnums tho.
