3 Pinots consumed over 2 days--one clear winner--07 Loring

The weird one of the bunch is the 06 Mountford from NZ. Not something that I enjoyed at all. Has a funny taste/feel that leaves the toungue feel like it is fizzy even though it isn’t. Very spicy, not my kind of Pinot. 82 points.

A better one is the 06 Scherrer RRV, showed quite thin the 1st day, improved on the second day. Nice cherry, tobacco and plums. Would not buy again. 88 points.

The winner by far is the 07 Loring Clos Pepe, I cleaned the store of this wines. Bold, textured, and long finish. I’ve had quite a few of them since they are great right now. Sadly, only 3 left and with the screwcap…too damn easy to open and go for them. 94 points and a great QPR.

Checking my inventory… Just might have some of the 2007 LWC. Have you had any from other vineyards?

Hi Nancy, with vacation approaching and lots of free time we’ll have to get together. Yes I’ve had one other vineyard from the 07 Lorings, but it’s this Clos Pepe that hits me just right.

We got to do the Mille Fleurs that we’ve talked about, I will have some special wines for us.

Otto

Otto, the Mountford did have a weird spritz but I still enjoyed it for the price. I’ll buy any of your remaining ones!

Deal, sell/trade you at my cost which was the nice deal from EBob ( please remind me of the deal price) Just PM me your wish and shipping info.

Thanks, Otto

If you don’t mind my kid, I will be in SD in early July. I can’t do an offline, but can eat, say hi and commiserate.

Otto,

Thanks for the notes.

Carolynn and I will be in San Diego for a few weeks starting next week–maybe we can get together!

Mark

Jack, of course we’ll have to meet. I know you’ll be busy with Sea World, the Zoo and maybe Legoland but we’ll have a get together.

Mark, would love to see you and Carolynn. It’s been a long, long time. I hope I’ll get past your British accents! [beee.gif]

Otto

Otto, sorry to hear that you didn’t like the Scherrer more than you did, although it’s obviously a much different style than Loring - more subtle now and a wine that ought to get more complex in years to come. I really enjoyed it at the Scherrer open house last month:

’06 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley: medium ruby color, rose petal, red fruits, a touch of rhubarb, and spice in the nose, a smooth texture on the palate, and some mild but noticeable tannins on the finish – this is quite nice now but promises to gain complexity with some bottle age.

I enjoy Loring Pinots too, but I think Scherrer is often overlooked when it comes to top-flight Pinots. Don’t know if your bottle just didn’t show well for whatever reason or it’s just not the style of Pinot you enjoy, but I liked it quite a bit.

You won’t mind our accents, but our uppity, better-than-you attitudes might turn you off

I did the Loring tasting over at Wine Exchange last week, which tasted across a 14 different pinots from varying vintages (mostly 06 and 07) and vineyards. While they didn’t have the Clos Pepe, I had the 06 Clos Pepe at a restaurant about 3 weeks ago and none of the wines I had during this tasting hold a candle to that wine. I can only imagine how good the 07 is.

We need to meet your kid to better understand you, Jack. I might even find him someone to care for him whilst we dine. Otto, how about a small dinner at MF?

We can have Otto work out the details since he doesn’t work much.

Sorry that Mark and Carolynn will be here when I am escaping.

Nancy, I’d love to arrange someting for us and Jack and his son. I’ve seen some pictures of his son, and happy to say that he looks like a great, handsome, friendly kid, in other words nothing like his Philly dad!!! [rofl.gif]

I’ll email you re the dates when Jack will be here and we’ll find something workable.

Mark, please email me when you are coming here. You and Carolynn are the nicest people around but I know that you’ve been looking at getting a knighthood for yourself, so you may be now one uppidy prick! [highfive.gif]

Love to all,
Otto

i was gonna open the Mountford tonight, it needs a decant or it’s a weird wine.

Keep us informed. Sometimes we talk about wine! [berserker.gif]

i ended up opening an 03 guigal CDP instead =).

We had the 2003 VT CdP the other day if my memory is working. 2005 Embruix de Vall Llach Priorat tonight. Might be my qpr sleeper of the spring.
