$29 2010 Barolo thread.

Getting hit with a barrage of email offers for $29 2010 Barolo. Thinking the next 6 months or so might be a good time to load in some cellar-defenders. Pat’s Barolo thread has been very helpful, but I am having trouble sorting out the stuff you may want to have around for a short time. I like to think I prefer traditional, but after a Clerico, I will admit to enjoying modern here and there.

I am going to try a few and report my thoughts

Was looking at Sordo the other day. In my scouting, I saw one review that said wait till 2020. Another was lukewarm overall. Oops, not a cellar defender, but a wine that needs cellaring.

Tried Andrea Oberto last night. The presence of pie crust flavors (cinnamon, nutmeg, lard) had me thinking Cali cab although it was still identifiable as a Barolo. Quite nice, but I remember a 2009 Reverdito as having more balance between acidity and tannins as well as being more traditional in profile. That needs to be my next comparison.

Please feel free to ad in any thoughts on this price point or cellar defending Baroli in general.

I strongly approve of the parameters of this thread.

edit: Vajra tasting notes [all vintages, all blends] would be very much appreciated…

Not 2010, but since you expanded it for “cellar defending Baroli in general” I recently picked up '09 Guido Porro Lazzairasco for $25. Haven’t tried it yet though.

Be interesting to see what you find from 2010 for $29.

2010 Vajra Nebbiolo seems to be gone in the USA. Too bad, what a great wine for $26 or so…

It’s not Barolo, but the 2010 De Forville Barbaresco Loreto is lovely and can be had for $28 at PJ’s here in NYC. I posted on it recently.

The 2011 is excellent and I picked that up for under $20 by the case recently.

Vajra Barolo 2010 beat in a double blind tasting two weeks ago Bartolo Mascarello 2010.
Difference was, that the Bartolo was decanted and the Vajra came out of the bottle.
I thought of the Mascarello stronger the first time I had it, but still two super wines.

Which Vajra? I purchased btls of the Bricco delle Viole and Barolo Albe (the latter only a dollar over $29!).

2011 might make for better early drinking cellar defenders than the '10s. I’d also look to backfill '05s and '07s, and Alto Piemonte wines from '09.

This is available for $25 with free shipping today only from WL. I went for 6.

OK. So I jumped on WL and grabbed a sampler pack. 2x2009 Sordo Rocche, 2x2010 Vajra d’albe, 2x Porro Liz. It did average $30 or so.

I am interested to see how they taste in light of Pat’s master thread on Traditional vs. Modern.

That’s where I found it as well.

how is the 2010 produttori barbaresco?

I’m interested to read what you think

I will be surprised if you find anything good to drink at $29.

Have you tried any of the wines people have recommended here?

Not really sure but think the only 2010s listed were Vajra, Sordo and Oberto. Tasted the Vajra and really liked it. But $35 retail. Tasted the Oberto and liked it. Again $35 and up. Have not tasted the Sordo. But I doubt it is going to be worth drinking. Like it or not there is a cost to play the Barolo game. And it seems the cost is around $35.

Whatever, you get plenty under $29…wholesale.

There was also the Porro Barolo and the De Forville Barbaresco.

The Vajra Albe is available a number of places for $32, so not quite $29 but under $35.

Welllll, I do get some, but not plenty. My wholesale in Virginia is a little high. And if you are buying no-name Barolo, all you have is a name. I would rather have good Nebbiolo over mediocre Barolo. You can’t drink a name.

I certainly have no interest in industrial Barolo. You may not know but De Forville is imported by Rosenthal and Porro by Kermit Lynch. So those cantine may not be well known, but they are high quality.
