Getting hit with a barrage of email offers for $29 2010 Barolo. Thinking the next 6 months or so might be a good time to load in some cellar-defenders. Pat’s Barolo thread has been very helpful, but I am having trouble sorting out the stuff you may want to have around for a short time. I like to think I prefer traditional, but after a Clerico, I will admit to enjoying modern here and there.
I am going to try a few and report my thoughts
Was looking at Sordo the other day. In my scouting, I saw one review that said wait till 2020. Another was lukewarm overall. Oops, not a cellar defender, but a wine that needs cellaring.
Tried Andrea Oberto last night. The presence of pie crust flavors (cinnamon, nutmeg, lard) had me thinking Cali cab although it was still identifiable as a Barolo. Quite nice, but I remember a 2009 Reverdito as having more balance between acidity and tannins as well as being more traditional in profile. That needs to be my next comparison.
Please feel free to ad in any thoughts on this price point or cellar defending Baroli in general.
Not 2010, but since you expanded it for “cellar defending Baroli in general” I recently picked up '09 Guido Porro Lazzairasco for $25. Haven’t tried it yet though.
Vajra Barolo 2010 beat in a double blind tasting two weeks ago Bartolo Mascarello 2010.
Difference was, that the Bartolo was decanted and the Vajra came out of the bottle.
I thought of the Mascarello stronger the first time I had it, but still two super wines.
Not really sure but think the only 2010s listed were Vajra, Sordo and Oberto. Tasted the Vajra and really liked it. But $35 retail. Tasted the Oberto and liked it. Again $35 and up. Have not tasted the Sordo. But I doubt it is going to be worth drinking. Like it or not there is a cost to play the Barolo game. And it seems the cost is around $35.
Welllll, I do get some, but not plenty. My wholesale in Virginia is a little high. And if you are buying no-name Barolo, all you have is a name. I would rather have good Nebbiolo over mediocre Barolo. You can’t drink a name.
I certainly have no interest in industrial Barolo. You may not know but De Forville is imported by Rosenthal and Porro by Kermit Lynch. So those cantine may not be well known, but they are high quality.
