Anywhere in the EU would do I’d assume?
if you buy wine in Euro and store in the UK are their tariffs ?
Sorry I’m not sure I understand the question.
If you buy wine in Germany and ship to the UK to store but the eventual destination is the USA, do you have to pay tariffs for the transfer to the UK ?
I’m not really the person to ask. But I wouldn’t have thought so.
But not many people will ship to the UK directly from the EU these days.
There’s no tariff.
But, if you’re just asking a shop to put items in a box and DPD/DHL/UPS them over, you’ll probably pay European duty (just a few pennies), European VAT (between 19% and 22%), and then, once it arrives in the UK, UK VAT of 20% — including on the postage costs — plus UK duty (usually about £2.50 per bottle) and a handling fee of £10–£15 per box.
Some merchants in Europe will deduct their own national VAT and duty if they’re sending goods outside the EU, but all of those fees from the UK side will still apply once the shipment enters the UK.
The only way to avoid these charges would be to send the goods to a bonded warehouse. In that case, you wouldn’t pay VAT or duty on either side. However, it’s very difficult to get items into a bonded warehouse because of the amount of post-Brexit/excise paperwork required. Almost no shop would find it worthwhile to send to a bonded warehouse unless it was a sizeable quantity.
Grosser Ring Auctions are one of the few places where you can actually do this, as Howard Ripley import German auction wines. They allow you to place bids in the usual manner. They bring them in via the LCB Bonded Warehouse. You’d need to check with HR whether you can store wines there long-term, but if you have an account, you should be able to do so.
Last I checked, which was a couple of years ago, Ripley would indeed allow you to store (for a fee) in-bond wines that you purchased from them in the bonded facility. The fee was charged annually based on quantity in the warehouse as of a magic date each year.
I’m going to participate this year. No big change for us here in Panama. I have access to the Nahe auction, the VDP was kind enough to send me a bottle of all the lots going up this year. Shipping it via Air plus going through Panamanian Customs wasn’t easy. Going to taste through them with my customers in a few days.
Please post your tasting notes for our benefit as well, thank you!
Stepping in as an unofficial rep for Ripley, we place auction bids on behalf of customers and arrange under bond shipping back to the UK.
We also offer bonded storage, our rates are £1.35 per year per bottle (doubled/halved for magnums/halves) billed annually in May for the upcoming year.
